Embracing Heritage On and Off the Court
As a scholar-athlete at Bryn Mawr, Saya Feldman integrates cultural heritage with academic and athletic pursuits. Being Japanese American isn't just a facet of identity; it's a guiding force in daily life.
"As a Japanese American student-athlete, my cultural background is extremely important to me," Feldman shares. "It dictates the way I manage myself both on and off the court and ties me to my family and heritage."
Cultural Values Fueling Athletic Drive
The principles of integrity, perseverance, and discipline—deeply rooted in Japanese culture—are not just abstract concepts for Feldman; they are lived experiences that shape her approach to training and competition.
"Traditional values of perseverance, integrity, and discipline influence the way in which I practice, compete, and live," she explains.
A Message for AANHPI Heritage Month
As the campus community observes AANHPI Heritage Month, Feldman offers a poignant reminder of the diversity within the community.
"Take the time to see AANHPI individuals in our full complexity," she urges. "AANHPI communities are not a monolith—each carries a multitude of culture, history, and unique identity. This month is a chance to listen more deeply, ask better questions, and make space for stories that aren't always centered."
Through dedication to sport, academics, and cultural heritage, Saya Feldman exemplifies the multifaceted identity of AANHPI scholar-athletes, enriching the campus community with unique perspectives and experiences.
