READING, Pa. – The Bryn Mawr track and field program traveled to Alvernia University to compete in their second to last meet before the Centennial Conference Championships which will be held at Franklin & Marshall. On the day, senior Margaret Hardigg placed sixth in the high jump (1.54m), first-year Jessica Johnson finished seventh in the long jump (4.79m), and sophomore Lauren Kitay qualified for championships in the mile with a new PR of 5:37.74.
The Owls began the day at jumps, senior Margaret Hardigg and first-year Jessica Johnson competing in the high jump. Hardigg cleared her first two attempts and managed a 1.54m on the fourth attempt, earning the senior sixth place and a season best. Hardigg now ranks 11th in the region and sixth in the Centennial Conference. Hardigg would later go on to the triple jump with a height of 9.03m. First-year Johnson also cleared the first two attempts in the high jump, reaching 1.49 on the third attempt, just missing a season best. Johnson would later compete in the long jump, earning seventh place with a height of 4.79m.
After finishing the jumps, Bryn Mawr moved on to the 60m, 400m, and 200m. Sophomore Kayla Camille led the 60m group with a time of 8.76s and first-year Lucy Sparks earned a personal record (10.33s) in the event. After earning her own personal record (PR) in the 60m with a time of 10.12s, sophomore Nora Steil, would later finish with a second PR in shot put (8.53m) and also record a distance of 6.28m at weight throw. First-year Madeleine Yao competed in both the 400m (68.59s) and 200m (29.40), while Camille finished out the group with 30.24s in the 200m.
"We are still getting over some illness on the team this week," said head coach Jason Hewitt. "We have some fighting through, some fighting back, and some still out, but you can see each member of the team really trying to make the best of it." Coach Hewitt continued, "when things were clicking, we got great results, but even when we weren't 100%, we got a lot out of this meet."
The Owls would also earn strong finishes in the mile. Over the past two weeks, sophomore Lauren Kitay has claimed a new PR in the 3k. On the day, despite leading the heat from start to finish, the sophomore managed a new PR of 5:37.74, qualifying her for conference championships. Kitay was also joined by junior Evelyn Cheng (5:51.90) who also earned a PR. First-year Phylicia Cannon competed in the 800m, which she had debuted in last week, to run a season best of 2:57.38. Seniors Eliza Lehman (11:45.53) and Sofi Guven (11:58.50) rounded out the squad in the 3000m, with Guven picking up a PR.
The Owls will return next Sunday to compete in Princeton, N.J. before traveling to Franklin & Marshall on February 25th to compete in the Centennial Conference Championships.
