Owls Showcase Toughness in Scoreless Draw With Rowan

Box Score

BRYN MAWR, Pa. – The Owls soccer team was back in action earlier Monday, as Bryn Mawr welcomed Rowan to campus for another non-conference test. In what slowly evolved into a well-played and physical contest, neither side was able to put the ball in the back of the net and ultimately the teams played to a 0-0 draw. Natalia Chorzepa had a great game in goal for the Owls, stopping every shot she faced and racking up seven saves. The rest of the Owls defense and midfield put in a tremendous shift all afternoon as well, limiting the Profs chances and mostly preventing any serious scoring opportunities for the visitors.

Bryn Mawr had their best offensive chances in the first half of today's contest. The Owls earned a pair of corner kicks just eight minutes into the action, but neither of those chances resulted in a shot. Bryn Mawr kept the pressure on though, and after weathering a few Rowan opportunities, the Owls got a shot of their own a little later. Amanda Cruz got the first look at the Profs goal about 17 minutes into the contest, running onto a Profs turnover while their goalkeeper was off the line and chipping a shot over top of her. The ball seemed destined for the back of the net, but it had ever so slightly too much pace and carried just over the top of the crossbar. After Bryn Mawr turned away another Profs attack, Paige Mastripolito had the next decent chance for Bryn Mawr, but she too put a little too much power on her effort and sent the ball over the goal.

On the other end, perhaps the key defensive play of the game came with just under 15 minutes to go in the first half. Rowan possessed the ball on the left side of the Owls defensive third, making a couple of connections to work the ball down towards the corner. An Owls defender tried to clear the ball from danger, but the clearing effort instead caromed off of her foot and towards the top of the Bryn Mawr penalty box. A Prof was the first to regain possession, but several Owls defenders challenged the touch. The ball then squirted through the pack of players and toward the penalty mark, where a different Rowan attacker sprinted on and gained control. Moving from right to left across the penalty area, the Profs player was now alone in front of Chorzepa from about ten yards out and swung a left-footed shot on goal. However, the Owls' first-year goaltender stood strong, rapidly throwing her hands up to collect the shot and prevent a rebound to boot.

The Owls started the second half off with a corner kick opportunity right out of the gate, but were once again unable to get a shot off on the effort. Rowan slowly started to control more and more of the play from there, with the Profs ultimately taking eight shots and four corner kicks in the duration of the second half. Chorzepa still proved to be unbeatable though, stopping every shot she was called on for, and she and the rest of the Owls defense were able to see out the rest of the game and claim the draw.

The scoreless draw is the first such result for Bryn Mawr since a 0-0 tie against Washington College in October of 2014. The draw is also the second in the past three games for the Owls, as they have done a good job of buckling down defensively and limiting opponent chances for the most part in their most recent games. They'll look to do the same on Wednesday when they get back into Centennial Conference play with a matchup against Ursinus. Gametime on Wednesday afternoon is set for 4:00 PM on Applebee Field.
