The Owls Grab Fifth Place in the Bow-Tie Classica

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Bryn Mawr indoor track and field program earned a conference win against Haverford at the Bow-Tie Classica held at Ursinus College on Friday evening. The Owls had a successful night, finishing in fifth place, one spot below Ursinus. Bryn Mawr's impressive showing on the evening resulted in a personal record (PR) for almost every Owl in their respective event(s) along with a season best for five Bryn Mawr athletes and five college PRs.

Sophomore Colby Rossmassler shined on Friday evening, debuting in both the 60-meter hurdles (11.89) and the high jump (1.30m) to earn a PR in both events.

"Colby's starting to adventure out into many events this year," said head coach Jason Hewitt. "We were impressed by how fast she picked up hurdles last year, but the high jump today was really fun to see."

The Owls also added three conference qualifiers this week. First-year Jessica Johnson, who most recently broke a school record in the triple jump last week, competed in the 60-meter dash (8.62) and the high jump (1.40m). Johnson earned a PR in the 60-meter dash and a college PR in the high jump. Senior Margaret Hardigg earned a PR in the high jump (1.45m) and a season best in the triple jump (9.32m).

The team also welcomed first-year Lucy Sparks and junior Kate O'Laughlin to the track this weekend. Sparks competed in the 200-meter dash (36.81) and O'Laughlin earned a PR in the 800-meter run (3:16).

"It's great to see some of our athletes hitting qualifying marks this early in the season and many of our newer athletes getting their first marks," said Coach Hewitt. "This team still needs a lot more time on the track before we get to Champs, but we're in a solid place heading into the winter break."

The mile group put up a great performance as the crew continued to drop time with five more PRs (Lukabed Bati, Delaney Cairns, Eliza Lehman, Alex Rosen, and Sohini Sarkar) and four college PRs (Malin Just, Sofie Prieto, Lauren Kitay, and Ella Heipt). Marien Richardson (5:58.69) and Evelyn Fort (6:15.37) competed alongside their teammates in the mile to each collect a season best.

"Our distance team put a lot of work in this fall, and it shows in our strength in numbers and performances this early in the track season," Coach Hewitt commented. "I can't wait to see what this group looks like when we get the end of February."

The Owls collected additional PRs and season bests throughout the evening. Other PRs included Nora Steil in the weight throw (6.71m), Evelyn Cheng in the 5k (20:53), and Madeline Yao in the 200-meter dash (28.94). Kayla Camille earned an season best in the 60-meter dash (8.61) and 200-meter dash (29.44).

The team rounded out a meet with a 4x4 featuring three new members to the team and veteran at anchor Yao, Prieto, Sarkar, and Lehman brought the baton around in 4:56.64; their fastest time and just tenths of a second off a season best for the team.

Bryn Mawr ended the evening in fifth place, finishing one spot above Rutgers-Camden and two above Haverford.

"The team was supported today by Kass Wocjik '22 and friends of the team. Many thanks to those who made it to cheer at Ursinus this Friday and the many more who supported us from a far" – Coach Hewitt

The Owls will take a break for the holiday season and return on January 13th, 2023 to compete in the Spartan Invitational in Staten Island, N.Y.
