Soccer Closes Conference Campaign With Strong Battle Against Swarthmore

Box Score

BRYN MAWR, Pa. – The Owls soccer team welcome Swarthmore to campus earlier Tuesday afternoon for their final Centennial Conference contest of the 2021 season. Bryn Mawr put up a great fight against their Tri-College rivals, even controlling large portions of the second half of the day's contest. However, first-half goals from Abby Chang and Anwyn Urquhart were just enough to give the Garnet a 2-0 win on the afternoon. Grecia Prieto made six saves in net for the Owls, while Paige Mastripolito led the hosts with two shots in the contest.

The contest proved to be a fiery one from the beginning, as both sides had chances within the first ten minutes. Prieto made a solid save on a shot by the Garnet just two minutes in, and then the Owls had a corner kick opportunity just a few minutes after that. However, it was Swarthmore who would grab the momentum early, scoring a goal in the eighth minute to go ahead. The Garnet got possession of the ball in their own half, and then Samantha Barnes sent an excellent long ball over the Bryn Mawr midfield and down the left side. That pass sprung Chang, who ran onto the ball with plenty of time and space, dribbled into the penalty box, and scored from close range against a defenseless Prieto.

Bryn Mawr tried to mount an immediate counter to the early deficit, with Sarah Coufal taking a shot less than a minute after the goal, but that effort went wide. The visitors ended up maintaining most of the possession in the first half, and they would strike again in the 28th minute. Prieto would make a great save on a shot from distance, but the rebound fell kindly to Amelia Mounts, and she got a pass off to Urquhart who scored from close range to give the Garnet a 2-0 lead.

The Owls would do a great job of buckling down from there, really limiting the quality of Swarthmore's opportunities from that point on. In the second half, Bryn Mawr fought even harder, seeing a marked increase in ball possession and several more offensive opportunities. About 15 minutes into the half, Sarah Lohrey made a great run up the left side from her left back position, getting all the way into the Swarthmore end before letting a shot rip from just outside the penalty box. Swarthmore's Nora Greer made the save on that attempt, but Bryn Mawr kept the pressure up. Elizabeth Kiely had a shot go wide less than ten minutes later, and then the Garnet had a couple of shots of their own saved by Prieto.

Bryn Mawr's best offensive chance over the rest of the contest came in the 86th minute, as a foul in the Swarthmore end gave the Owls a free kick from straight on about 30 yards out. Justine Davis stepped up and sent a perfect long ball over the arms of Greer and on frame. However, the ball just caught the crossbar above the net, sending it back out into play and allowing the Garnet to clear it from danger. From there, Mastripolito would have one more halfway decent chance, but Greer gobbled that up, closing the door on the contest and allowing the Garnet to claim the 2-0 win.

The Owls will be right back in action later this week with two more non-conference contests. Bryn Mawr will travel to Harrisburg to take on Penn State Harrisburg on Thursday night before closing out their season on the road at FDU-Florham on Saturday at 3 PM.
