Soccer Nearly Pulls Off Big Win Over Gettysburg

Box Score

BRYN MAWR, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr soccer team nearly pulled off a historic win on Saturday afternoon on Applebee Field. The Owls got an early goal from Elizabeth Hummel, then held onto the lead for a long stretch of the game before Gettysburg used two second-half goals to take a 2-1 win on the day. Owls goalkeeper Grecia Prieto had a tremendous performance in front of the goal, making a career-high nine saves for Bryn Mawr to keep her team in the game the whole way.

Gettysburg got out of the gate with several shots in the first few minutes, but it was Bryn Mawr who struck first thanks to a strike from their current active goalscoring leader. Hummel managed to sneak between the Gettysburg back line and carry the ball into the penalty box against onrushing Bullets goalkeeper Maddie Cunningham. Hummel executed a perfect shot, sneaking the ball to the right of Cunningham and into the back of the net, giving the Owls a 1-0 lead.

The Owls had chances to double their advantage just ten minutes later, as Elizabeth Kiely and Sarah Coufal each got shots on goal within minutes of each other, but Cunningham managed to save those efforts. Meanwhile, Prieto and the Bryn Mawr defense continued to frustrate the Gettysburg forwards as the visitors tried to find a tying goal. The Owls constantly shut down passing channels in the final third, giving Gettysburg few options on the attack. On the chances the Bullets did get, Prieto stood strong, making eight saves in the frame to help give her team a 1-0 lead headed into halftime.

Bryn Mawr continued to play well early in the second half, as Emma McGinley got a shot off that forced Cunningham into another save. However, the Bullets finally broke onto the scoreboard a minute later, as Erika Muskus made a run down the left sideline and into the penalty box before putting a shot into the far netting, tying the game at 1-1. Bryn Mawr did well trying to respond to the goal, as the Owls got a couple of shots from Hummel and a corner kick over the next ten minutes. However, it would be Gettysburg who would get the next tally as well. The visitors earned a penalty kick after a foul almost at the edge of the penalty area. Emma Bedell stepped up and calmly slotted the shot into the right side of the goal, giving the visitors the 2-1 advantage. From there, Gettysburg shut down virtually every Owls attacking chance for the remaining 25 minutes; neither team would tally another shot or corner over the rest of the game.

The goal today is Bryn Mawr's first against Gettysburg since 2018. Perhaps more impressively, today's result marks just the third time in a 27-game series history that the Owls have lost by just one goal to Gettysburg. Today's result is also tied for the second-fewest goals Gettysburg has scored in a game this season, again a sign of the tremendous defensive performance of the Owls today.

Bryn Mawr will look to keep some positive momentum rolling into next week, as they will take on Haverford at home on Wednesday at 4:00 PM.
