Box Score BRYN MAWR, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr soccer team finally got a chance to get out in front of their home fans earlier Tuesday afternoon. After a five-game road trip to open the season, the Owls hit the pitch on Applebee Field to take on Washington College in their Centennial Conference opener. The Shorewomen jumped out to an early lead, but a beauty of a goal from senior defender Kara Breeden helped keep Bryn Mawr close. Unfortunately, the visitors held on the rest of the way through, ultimately claiming a 6-1 victory.
The Shorewomen dominated possession in the opening minutes of play, and that allowed the visitors to break through for two early goals. In fact, they might have had more but for the efforts of Baer in the goal for the Owls. The junior made numerous spectacular saves throughout the day, starting with a great dive to parry a ball away less than ten minutes into the game. Baer made another big save just three minutes later, and then a third ten minutes after that. That third save was another quick dive to the right to stop a hard low shot off the foot of Picabo French. Unfortunately, the ball was coming with so much pace that it was all Baer could do to parry it away, and it ended up right at the feet of Washington's Cayla Marcinko. She was able to calmly slot the ball home into the open net with Baer still on the ground, and that gave the Shorewomen a 3-0 lead in the affair.
Still looking for their first goal of the season, Bryn Mawr worked hard to shut down passing lanes and probe for a counterattacking opportunity, and the Owls finally got it in the waning minutes of the first half. Bryn Mawr started working the ball down the left sideline, forcing Washington College to clear over the sideline for a couple throw-ins, and then earning a free kick after a hard foul. Breeden stepped up to take the kick from the right sideline, about 30 yards out from goal. With a line of Owls waiting at the top of the box to crash towards the cage, Breeden drove a hard shot towards the back post. The ball was perfectly weighted and ended up arcing just over the outstretched hands of keeper Courtney Colbert and into the top corner of the far side of the goal, sending the Owls into a wild celebration near midfield. The goal was the first of Breeden's career and also broke the seal on the scoresheet for the Owls this season.
Unfortunately for Bryn Mawr, that goal ended up being the lone good offensive opportunity of the day. In the second half, the Shorewomen buckled back down and continued to apply pressure to the Owls defense. Baer continued to make diving save after diving save, ultimately racking up 11 saves on the day. However, the visitors cracked through for three more goals in the half, including a penalty kick tally from Sara Douglas. When the final horn sounded, Washington College claimed the 6-1 victory.
Bryn Mawr moves to 0-6 on the season, while Washington College ups their record to 6-3 so far this year. The Owls will get right back in action on Friday with a road trip to Gettysburg. Gametime in the historic central Pennsylvania town is slated for 7:00 PM.
