Strong Defensive Performance Helps Owls Post Solid Result Against Haverford

Box Score

BRYN MAWR, Pa. - What started out as a gloomy Tuesday around most of the region ended up turning into a beautiful afternoon on Applebee Field. It was under an unseasonably warm late-October sun that the Bryn Mawr soccer team faced off against crosstown Bi-Co rival Haverford. The Owls played terrific defense most of the day, almost completely shutting down what had previously been a potent Haverford attack. However, an early free-kick goal from the Fords' Katie Safter helped the visitors break through and ultimately claim a 3-0 win on the day. Owls goalkeeper Leah Baer made 13 saves on the afternoon in a strong performance guarding the net.

Bryn Mawr had to weather an early storm from the Fords, as the visitors earned a corner kick just over a minute into the game. That corner resulted in a shot for the Fords, but the effort sailed wide. The Owls did a great job in the early going keeping most of Haverford's attacks at bay, but a tough foul call at the top of the box would lead to Haverford's breakthrough. Katie Safter stepped up for a free kick and blasted the ball low into the right side of the goal just past the outstretched arms of Baer.

Despite falling behind early, Bryn Mawr did a great job rallying and getting the defense reorganized. In fact, it seemed as if the Owls might get through the first half without allowing a goal in the run of play, but the Fords struck again with less than 10 minutes to go in the half, this time off the foot of Taylor Cross. Again, Bryn Mawr responded well, with Baer making several great saves over the rest of the game to keep the Fords at bay. Meanwhile, Genevieve Main and Emily Elmore worked well together in the midfield to try and help relieve some pressure off of the Bryn Mawr defense. Several times, that duo paired up with other Owls attackers to punch the ball into the other side of the field, but ultimately each attack fizzled out as Haverford managed to hold Bryn Mawr shotless in the contest. Meanwhile, the visitors put a little salt in the wound at the end, scratching across one more goal with a minute to go off the foot of Saede Eifrig to seal the 3-0 victory.

Bryn Mawr will spend the rest of the week gearing up for one final game in 2017. The Owls will play host to Ursinus on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 PM as part of the Homecoming celebration this weekend. Bryn Mawr will look to send out seniors Kara Breeden and Codie Fiedler Kawaguchi on a high note with a big result against the Bears, who entered play today with a 2-10-2 overall record this season.
