Volleyball Gives Muhlenberg All They Can Handle in Close Match

Box Score

BRYN MAWR, Pa. - It was another tight Centennial Conference contest in the Class of 1958 Gym earlier Wednesday as the Owls hosted Muhlenberg College. Bryn Mawr did a fantastic job giving the Mules a tough time on the night, using a dominant second set to keep the match close. However, the visitors did just enough in the end to hang on and walk away with a 3-1 (25-21, 23-25, 25-12, 25-12) win on the night. Camille Baechler led Bryn Mawr with a strong 10 kill, 12 dig performance, while Allie Nagelski posted 21 digs for the Owls as well. Muhlenberg was led by Maggie Enestvedt, who led all players on the night with 17 kills.

The first set was a great foreshadowing of how the entire night would go, as the two teams traded blows the entire way. Bryn Mawr (0-11, 0-5 CC) took the first lead of the night after a Muhlenberg service error, but from there the sides would seemingly trade points back and forth the whole way. At one point, Bryn Mawr trailed by three, but kills from Baechler, Caroline Cosby, and Sarah Whitten helped the hosts knot things back up at 15-15. Muhlenberg (12-4, 4-1 CC) ultimately pulled out to a 23-18 lead and looked to take the opening set. Bryn Mawr was able to close the gap thanks to another service error and a kill by Colleen McGrath, but the visitors held on to ultimately win the set by a 25-21 score.

The second set was a completely different story, as the Owls put on a dominant and entertaining performance in front of the raucous home crowd. The hosts never trailed in the match, though it got a little more interesting at the end. After holding a lead as high as seven points midway through the frame, Bryn Mawr started to let the visitors creep back into the set. However, the Owls would not be deterred in this one, and their resiliency showed through late in the set. Caroline Cosby notched another kill, and then the Bryn Mawr defense went to work. The Owls forced the Mules into numerous long rallies, diving all over the floor to keep balls alive and frustrating the visitors' attack on numerous occasions. Finally, a bad set from the Mules after another marathon point gave Bryn Mawr the set in 25-23 fashion. After a fine nine kill, one error performance in the frame, the Owls had knotted the match back up at one set all.

Unfortunately for the Owls, it was Muhlenberg who seemed spurred on by that loss in the second set to up their game. Over the final two sets, the Mules combined for 24 kills, but what really seemed to help them was cleaning up their play. They went from seven errors in the second set to six in the third and just three in the fourth. Bryn Mawr tried to keep pace with Muhlenberg in both frames. In particular, Bryn Mawr put together a nice 5-1 run in the fourth set, thanks in part to two aces from Baechler and a kill from Cosby. However, it wasn't enough to keep pace with the efficient Mules offense in those two sets, as the visitors won each by a 25-12 score to take the match by a 3-1 score.

Bryn Mawr has put some great sets together in their past few matches, and they'll look to keep that hard work rolling and take a full match when they get back in action this weekend. The Owls will stay at home and play host to Gettysburg on Saturday afternoon for their next match, with things set to start at 1:00 PM.
