Box Score BRYN MAWR, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr soccer team welcomed Widener back to campus for a Saturday game this season, looking for a repeat of their 2-0 win last season. However, the Pride had a different result in mind, and after 80 minutes of scintillating back-and-forth action, it was the visitors who came up with the lone goal on the day to take revenge with a 1-0 victory. Gabrielle Campbell netted the game-winner for Widener in the 83rd minute of play. Senior Aviva Kosansky had a spectacular day in goal for the Owls, making nine saves, many of which were the "spectacular" variety. Junior Madeleine Mark had a great offensive game for Bryn Mawr, leading the team with three shots on the day.
Widener (3-3-1) had most of the early chances in the game, earning a corner kick after a Kosansky save and then pushing another shot just over the crossbar. However, Bryn Mawr (1-5) had plenty of chances throughout the day themselves. Katherine Nickols had maybe the best look of the day for the Owls, and it was just nine minutes into the game. The junior blasted a shot from outside the penalty box and forced Pride goalkeeper Olivia Pfautz into making a great save. Widener tallied the next seven shots of the game, but the Owls got another good look just before halftime when sophomore Haidyn Weight hit another great ball towards goal. Pfautz made another solid save, however, and the teams entered halftime still locked in a scoreless tie.
Things remained virtually the same all through the second half as well, with Widener controlling most of the possession but Bryn Mawr looking extremely dangerous on the counterattack. It appeared as if the game was headed for extra time, but the Pride changed all that with one goal. In the 83rd minute, Campbell tallied her first goal of the season after cross forced a failed clearing effort by the Bryn Mawr defense. The ball fell right to Campbell's feet, and she found the empty right side of the net.
Now trailing by a goal, the Owls threw everything they had forward, and ultimately earned one last good chance with just a few minutes to play. After a Widener foul and yellow card, senior Nina Bertolami stepped up and took a great free kick, but it sailed just over the crossbar at the far post, and that extinguished what would be the Owls' last chance of the game.
Bryn Mawr will be right back in action on Monday with a chance to rebound from today's tough loss. The Owls will take on Cairn University on Applebee Field in their final non-conference game of the season. The Owls hold a fantastic 12-1 record over the Highlanders in program history, their best winning percentage against another school that they've played more than twice. Last season, Bryn Mawr stunned Cairn on their home turf, surviving a two-goal comeback to win with a golden goal in the first overtime period from Bertolami. Monday's game is slated to start at 4:00 PM.
