Box Score Allentown, Pa. - For the third time in four straight games, the Bryn Mawr soccer team pitched a shutout against a very high-powered offense through the entire first half. However, the Owls couldn't keep Muhlenberg off the scoreboard much longer than that, as the hosts scored twice in the opening 90 seconds of the second half and were able to hang on for what would ultimately be a 3-0 win. Senior goalkeeper Aviva Kosansky made eight saves in a solid defensive effort, while Madeleine Mark led the Owls with two shots off the bench. Abby Lazofsky was the woman of the match tonight, as the substitute scored twice to help the hosts secure the victory.
Muhlenberg (2-8-1, 1-3 CC) had the first good crack at getting on the scoreboard as they earned a corner kick just three minutes into the game. However, the Owls defense did just enough to force Makenzie O'Brien's header attempt wide and keep the game scoreless. Following that, it was Bryn Mawr's (2-9, 0-4 CC) turn to get a chance in the offensive zone. Ultimately, it was Kara Breeden who found the ball at her feet and managed to rip a shot towards the net, but her attempt sailed just over the bar.
A few minutes later, it was senior Caitlin Homstad who had a great chance. She was able to take possession of the ball and send another shot towards the Mules goal, but goalkeeper Jen Mermelstein was able to get in front of the ball and preserve her shutout for the moment. The Owls would get another great chance on a corner kick a few minutes later, but nobody could get on the other end of Haidyn Weight's service into the box, and that ended Bryn Mawr's last good chance of the half. Muhlenberg dominated the closing ten minutes of the half, getting three corner kicks and three shots. However, one of those shots went wide, the defense blocked another, and the final was saved by Kosansky as the half ended scoreless.
Unfortunately, all that solid defensive work by the Owls went out the window just 19 seconds into the second half. On the first play of the new period, Lazofsky got behind the defense on a great through pass from Taylor Pini and managed to chip a shot over Kosansky and into the net to put the hosts up 1-0. The Owls didn't even have a chance to catch their breath from that goal before Muhlenberg scored again right after that. Less than a minute later, it was Makenzie O'Brien who would finish at the far post on another nice assist from Pini, and all of a sudden, the Mules found themselves with a 2-0 lead.
Bryn Mawr tried to battle back into the match, and they got a good chance to get back within one in the 73rd minute. It was Mark who would find the ball at her feet and send a shot towards the Muhlenberg net, but once again Mermelstein would make the save. That same process would be repeated just eight minutes later, as the Mules goalkeeper kept Mark off the board for a second time in the half. That would be Bryn Mawr's final chance of the half, and with one more goal for Lazofsky with minutes to spare, Muhlenberg closed out the win in 3-0 fashion.
Bryn Mawr will be right back in action this weekend as they continue their mid-October road trip through the league. The Owls will face off against Centennial Conference foe Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa. on Saturday afternoon for a 1:00 match.
