Box Score BRYN MAWR, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr soccer team played their final home game of 2015 on Applebee Field earlier Wednesday afternoon, and it turned out to be a difficult one. The Owls played some very solid team defense, but found themselves on the wrong end of a 3-0 scoreline against their cross-town rivals Haverford. The visitors went up early in the first half on a set piece goal, and then sealed the win with two goals midway through the second half. Aviva Kosansky made ten saves on the day, including some great diving efforts. Haverford was led by Jo Haller, who had a hand in all three goals in the game by assisting on the first and scoring the second two.
Bryn Mawr (3-12, 1-7 CC) tried to get out to a quick start in the match with some good early possession, but it was Haverford (10-3-1, 3-3-1 CC) who managed to tally the first goal of the game just nine minutes in. After a Bryn Mawr foul along the right side, Haller stepped up to send in a free kick. She put a great cross into the box, just in front of the goal a few yards out. The Fords' Katie Safter managed to get perfect positioning and get a head on the service, and her header went low and to the right of Kosansky and into the net to put the visitors up 1-0.
Bryn Mawr tried to battle back and tie the game back up as the half went on. In the 19th minute, Fiona Steele was able to get possession of the ball and fire a shot towards the Haverford goal, but Ali Weiner was able to make the save. Later on in the half, Hannah Broderick had a chance to get a shot towards the net, but her effort was blocked by the Haverford defense, and that shut the door any further scoring opportunities for the Owls in the half.
Just over a minute into the second half, Haverford would double their lead. This time, it was Haller who did the scoring, as she took a pass from Skyler Ellenburg and fired a low shot past Kosansky to give the visitors an insurance goal. Less than ten minutes later, Haller netted her second goal of the day. The Haverford forward did all the work herself this time, stealing a ball from an Owls defender and getting a 1-on-1 rush into the box. She was able to curl a shot from the left side of the box around Kosansky and into the far netting to give Haverford a 3-0 lead in the contest.
Try as they might, Bryn Mawr just couldn't get the offense going today. The Owls best chance for a goal came in the 76th minute. After a Haverford foul, Bryn Mawr had a free kick in a very dangerous spot at the top right corner of the penalty box. After setting up a few runners around the penalty spot, Katherine Nickols stepped up and ripped a shot towards the goal. However, it went just wide of the far post, and that closed the book on the Owls scoring efforts on the day.
Bryn Mawr will close their season with a two-game road trip, starting this weekend with a Saturday trip to Johns Hopkins. The Owls will face off against a tough Blue Jays squad who currently hold a 10-3-1 record and are fighting for first place in the conference with a 6-1 league record. They are also in the midst of a four-game win streak, coming off a 5-1 win over Dickinson earlier this evening. Saturday's match is set to kick off at 1:00 PM in Baltimore.
