Set Pieces Prove Decisive as Owls Fall to Gettysburg

Box Score

BRYN MAWR, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr soccer team once again put on a brilliant defensive clinic earlier Saturday afternoon on Applebee Field. The Owls were outshot by visiting Gettysburg, yet managed to shut down every attack that came from the run of play on the day. Ultimately, it was two set pieces that cost the Owls, as the Bullets scored once on a free kick in the first half, and then converted a penalty kick that resulted from a corner kick in the second to take home a 2-0 win.

Bryn Mawr (3-11, 1-6 CC) came into the game with plenty of momentum after their big comeback win over Washington College earlier in the week. However, it was Gettysburg (7-2-4, 4-2 CC) who controlled a majority of possession on the day. The Bullets outshot Bryn Mawr by a 26-2 margin and earned eight corner kicks on the day. However, nearly all of the Bullets' shots came from outside the box or were of a very soft nature, a testament to the fantastic defense Bryn Mawr is playing right now. Even when a shot came on goal, senior goalkeeper Aviva Kosansky was able to stop it, as she posted five saves on the day in a solid effort.

In any tightly contested game like today's, set pieces will always play a key role, and on this afternoon it was the Bullets who took advantage of them. In the middle of the first half, a Bryn Mawr foul right at the top of the penalty box gave the Bullets a great opportunity to put a shot on goal. They sent up their leading goalscorer on the season, Lauren Schapiro, and she turned out to be a good choice. The senior stepped up and ripped a powerful right-footed shot past the wall and just inside the right post to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Bryn Mawr was able to shut down the Bullets for the rest of the half and a good portion of the second, but it was another set piece that got Gettysburg an insurance goal. With 15 minutes left to go in the game, the Bullets earned a corner kick and sent a dangerous cross into the center of the penalty box. Bryn Mawr's defense briefly cleared the danger, but a Gettysbug player collected the clearance and sent a strong shot towards the goal. The ball struck a Bryn Mawr defender in the hand, and the head referee immediately whistled for a penalty kick. Hannah Theurer stepped up to take that kick and sent the ball low and hard to the left center of the goal to double the Gettysburg lead. Bryn Mawr was unable to get any offensive attack going in response, and the Bullets held on for the 2-0 win.

The Owls will get the next few days off before returning to action next Wednesday with a big match against crosstown rival Haverford. The Fords boast a 9-3-1 overall record and will be a tough challenge, but Bryn Mawr will certainly be pumped up for a chance to take another Centennial Conference win at home. Wednesday's game kicks off at 4:00 PM on Applebee Field.
