Ofili Sets New Career Kills Mark in Owls Loss at Washington College

Box Score

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Bryn Mawr senior Rachel Ofili has been a force at the net for the Owls volleyball program since she arrived on campus, and tonight's effort at Washington College further proved that point. Ofili got four kills in a tough 3-0 loss to the Shorewomen to vault into the top spot as the all-time leader in kills in Bryn Mawr history. Along with Ofili, Megan Kilmer and Sarah Gates also tallied four kills on the night to lead Bryn Mawr. Washington College used 17 kills from Kristin Lee and a potent .372 hitting percentage to run away with a 3-0 victory in the match.

Fittingly on the night, it was Ofili who got the Owls their first point, using an assist from Zoe Holman to notch her first kill of the evening. She would get another kill two points later to help Bryn Mawr (6-12, 1-5 CC) keep things close early. However, Washington College (13-7, 2-3 CC) really dominated the opening set from start to finish. An eight-point run made it 13-3 early on, and then two more 5-0 runs put the set virtually out of reach for the Owls. Ultimately, Washington would take the frame in 25-8 fashion.

In the second set, it was the Owls who jumped in front early. Throughout the early portion of the frame, Bryn Mawr managed to cling to a one-point lead. Washington finally pulled ahead at 9-8, but then the Owls went on a 6-0 run of their own to vault back ahead. Washington College took a timeout, and that helped staunch the bleeding momentarily, but Bryn Mawr continued to hold the lead over the next couple of points. With the score at 16-14, Ofili would break the record, smashing a ball off of two Washington College blockers and out of bounds for her 1,018th career kill. Unfortunately, that three-point margin was as large as the Owls lead would get in the set. The Shorewomen stormed back in the frame, using an 8-2 rally to go ahead 22-19. Bryn Mawr managed to get back as close as 22-24 on a rare attack error from Washington College, but the hosts closed out the set with one more kill to take the 25-22 win.

The Shorewomen also controlled play in the third set, getting out to an early 10-2 lead in the frame. Kills from Caroline Cosby, Noemi Moreno, and Kilmer all helped the Owls chip away at their deficit. However, Washington College continued to pour it on, ultimately closing out the set and the match with a 25-11 win of the set.

The loss closes the book on the Owls last long road trip of the season, as Bryn Mawr will return to the friendly confines of the Class of 1958 Gymnasium for their next two contests. First up is another tough matchup against a quality Gettysburg team. The Bullets are currently 10-10 on the season and 1-3 in conference play. The Owls will host Gettysburg this Saturday at 1:00 PM on the Bryn Mawr campus.
