Owls Come From Behind to Shock Shorewomen

Box Score

CHESTERTOWN, Pa. - It was a win for the ages earlier Wednesday evening for the Bryn Mawr soccer team. On the wrong end of a 2-0 scoreline and facing a clock that was perilously close to running out, the Owls tallied three goals in the final seven minutes of play to stun hosts Washington College and take a thrilling 3-2 victory. Haidyn Weight and Veronica Roux each scored about two and a half minutes apart to tie the game up. Then, just when it appeared extra time would be needed, Fiona Steele sent a beautiful ball into the top corner to put the Owls ahead with just seconds remaining and send the team into a frenzy.

It had been a long night for the first 80 minutes or so for the visiting Owls. Bryn Mawr (3-10, 1-5 CC) had been outshot and outcornered, faced a 2-0 deficit, and had just ten minutes left to work with and try and at least get on the scoreboard. Sophomores Haidyn Weight and Fiona Steele combined to do just that for the Owls. Steele got control of a ball along the wing and sent a curling cross into the box. Weight was positioned perfectly on the other end, getting her head on the ball right in front of the goal and sending it into the net to get Bryn Mawr back within one.

With renewed vigor, the Owls continued to attack in search of that tying goal. Bryn Mawr had the Shorewomen on their heels and continued to control possession in the attacking third, and all that pressure paid off just over two minutes later. The Owls got the ball into the Washington College penalty box, but lost possession. However, the ball bounced around dangerously in that area, and Veronica Roux was the first person to capitalize on that opportunity. The senior forward has plenty of scoring experience and knew exactly what to do with the ball, sending a quick shot past the Shorewomen's keeper and into the netting, and all of a sudden it was a brand new ball-game.

The wild action continued over the final four minutes of play as both sides now frantically searched for the game-winner. Washington College had the first good opportunity to go ahead when they earned a free kick with 90 seconds left. With the ball on the left side of the Owls box, a Shorewomen player sent a curling free kick in towards the top of the goal box. Owls goalkeeper Aviva Kosansky was forced to make a tremendous save, as the ball bounced off the turf and was headed straight over her head. However, the senior keeper got just enough of a touch on the ball to knock it off the crossbar. She then had to make another save on the resulting header that Washington College got, and then the Bryn Mawr defense, which has been solid all season, cleared the ball out to midfield to shut down the opportunity.

As the ball made it down to the other end of the field, Bryn Mawr started to get their shape back and send a few players upfield to press the attack. The Shorewomen back line failed to get a good clearing effort on, and suddenly the ball found its way to the feet of Steele at the top left of the Washington College box. The talented sophomore settled the ball, and then sent a beautiful curling shot over the keeper's head and into the far upper 90 to put Bryn Mawr ahead 3-2 and start a mass celebration at midfield and on the Bryn Mawr bench. The Owls still had to close out the final 54 seconds of play, and they did so with gusto, forcing a final desparate shot wide, and with that, Bryn Mawr excitedly claimed their first Centennial Conference win of the season.

Washington College (3-7-1, 0-5 CC) tallied two goals in the first half to take the early 2-0 lead. Emani Silva netted the opener off a short shot on a corner kick in the eighth minute, and then Erin Smedley doubled the hosts lead with ten minutes left to go in the half on a shot from outside the box.

Tonight's victory is the first Owls win against Washington College since 2010. Kosansky made ten saves in the win, her third-highest total this season. With her goal tonight, Roux leads the team this year with three goals on the season.

Bryn Mawr will look to keep this positive momentum as they return home to Applebee Field on Saturday. The Owls will host Gettysburg College at 1:30 PM on campus in search of their second straight victory. It will be a tough test, however, as Gettysburg currently holds a 6-2-4 overall record and a 3-2 record in conference play. Look for Bryn Mawr to continue to play stingy defense and get some quick counter opportunities when the two teams face off this weekend.
