Box Score Bryn Mawr, Pa. – It was a tough afternoon on the pitch for the Bryn Mawr soccer squad earlier this Saturday. Facing a talented Gettysburg squad on the road, the Owls played a spectacular defensive game, with goalkeeper Aviva Kosansky coming up with eight big saves in net for Bryn Mawr. Unfortunately, the Bullets simply had too many chances, scoring three times late in the game to preserve a 4-0 victory over the Owls.
Bryn Mawr (5-8-1, 1-5-1 Cent.) was forced to play heavily in their own end from the start of the match, as Gettysburg (9-3-1, 5-0-1 Cent.) tallied their first shot of the game just 1:21 into play. However, the Owls defense buckled down well, clearing out most of the trouble and allowing Kosansky to make some strong saves behind them. "Aviva had her angles covered for many saves in the game," Bryn Mawr head coach Erin DeMarco stated. The Owls also got some help from the woodwork, as the Bullets nailed the crossbar on a shot at the 20:26 mark. "We also had numerous moments of sustaining an attack in the first half," said DeMarco. "We just didn't get anything to show for it."
The game remained scoreless through a half-hour of play, but that is exactly when Gettysburg managed to scratch across the first goal of the game. The Bullets' Hannah Theurer took a shot from the right side of the Bryn Mawr penalty box that sailed in after a deflection by Kosansky, giving the hosts a valuable 1-0 lead. The Owls continued to defend well over the remainder of the half, however, to limit the damage to just the one score in the frame.
After a rousing halftime break, the Owls managed to create their first chance of the game just five minutes into the second half. Bryn Mawr worked the ball upfield and managed to find Veronica Roux. The tall forward laced a shot towards the Gettysburg net, but it hung just wide, granting the Bullets a reprieve. "In the second half, we were determined to deny opportunities for Gettysburg," DeMarco expressed. However, the hosts would end up scoring their first insurance goal just five minutes later on a pretty bit of passing at the top of the box, with Georgia Ferguson tallying her third goal of the season in the end.
In the 67th minute, Bryn Mawr managed to work their way into the attacking end again, this time earning a corner kick. However, no Owls were able to get on the end of Nina Bertolami's cross, and that would be Bryn Mawr's final real threat of the game. Gettysburg would score twice more before the final horn sounded to take the victory in 4-0 fashion.
The Owls now face their final road contest of the season on Wednesday afternoon for their next contest. Bryn Mawr will travel just down the Main Line to Haverford for a contest between two very similar squads. The Fords have struggled of late, coming into the contest having won just one out of their last five matches. Meanwhile, Bryn Mawr will have a great chance for their first win over their rivals in twenty games. Things all kick off at 4:00 PM on Wednesday afternoon in Haverford.
