Box Score Bryn Mawr, Pa. – The Owls volleyball squad suffered another tough loss earlier Saturday afternoon. Bryn Mawr hosted the Red Devils of Dickinson College, and although they were able to take the match to 1-1 after an early deficit, the visitors ultimately came away with the 3-1 match victory. Sarah Gates and Rachel Ofili led the way for the Owls with 11 kills apiece, and Danielle Preziuso notched 37 assists in the effort.
After taking a 25-18 loss in the first set, Bryn Mawr (9-11, 0-5 Cent.) made a raucous comeback in the second to get back in the match. Dickinson (5-10, 1-4 Cent.) took an early lead in the set, but the Owls used a four-point run to come back and re-tie, then take the lead in the match. An attack error and a bad set helped the Owls get ahead, and then back-to-back kills by Ellen Chiu made it 9-6 in favor of the hosts. Dickinson was able to briefly stop that run with a single point, but Bryn Mawr went on to win six of the next seven points to take a 15-8 lead. Chiu tallied another kill for one of those points, but the other five all came on various Dickinson errors. Now trailing big, the Red Devils ran up a six-point run of their own to get back within one.
Coach Sarah Lambert used a timeout to try and ice the visitors and help her team regroup, and it worked like magic. Bryn Mawr came out of the stoppage and regained the serve thanks to a big kill from Gates, and after an error from the Red Devils, Noemi Moreno tallied a kill of her own to make it an 18-14 game. Dickinson tried to get back in it, getting as close as 16-18, but the Owls closed the match out brilliantly. Gates and Moreno each registered two more kills in the set as Bryn Mawr won seven of the final eight points. At 23-16, Ofili nailed the ball down into the court to make it set point, and then a wonderfully-placed serve from Megan Kilmer closed out the frame in favor of the Owls.
Unfortunately, that would be the high-water mark for Bryn Mawr on the evening. Dickinson would go on to win the third set in easy fashion, never trailing in the frame. In the fourth, the Red Devils jumped out to a 12-8 lead, but Bryn Mawr managed to regain the advantage in the set with five straight points. Gates got that run started with a kill, and then Lauren Shue won three of the next four points on her own with service aces. The teams traded points back-and-forth over the next few serves, but Dickinson jumped ahead 19-16 with a three-point run of their own. Bryn Mawr answered back one final time to retie the game, but Dickinson won six of the last seven points to close out the set 25-20 and take home a 3-1 match win.
With the loss, the Owls slip to 9-11 on the season and are still seeking their first Centennial Conference victory. The squad will close out their three-game homestand on Wednesday evening with another opportunity at a league win, as Bryn Mawr hosts Washington College. The Shorewomen are also still looking for a Centennial win, as they are 15-6 overall but currently 0-4 in the league. Wednesday's match tips off at 7:00 PM in the Class of 1958 Gymnasium.
