In the bustling worlds of academia and athletics, Bryn Mawr College
Sarah Lohrey (Class of 2025) shines brightly as a prime example of a dedicated scholar-athlete. Majoring in mathematics and minoring in education studies on the certification track, Sarah excels both in the classroom and on the soccer field.
Sarah's recent achievement in the spotlight is her research project, "Arithmetic Progressions of Integers that are Relatively Prime to their Digital Sums," which she conducted during the summer of 2023 as part of the Moravian University Math and Computer Science REU Program. Funded by the National Science Foundation Grant MPS-2150299, the project delves into the intriguing realm of b-anti-Niven numbers—positive integers relatively prime to the sum of their digits in base-b representation. Sarah's work explores the maximum lengths of sequences and arithmetic progressions of such numbers.
Reflecting on her time at Bryn Mawr, Sarah emphasizes the crucial role of the community of students and professors in her personal and academic growth. She shares, "The community at Bryn Mawr has helped me become more confident by pushing me to reach new academic levels and providing the space to make mistakes and learn from them."
Bryn Mawr's soccer team holds a special place in Sarah's heart, providing invaluable lessons that extend beyond the field and into her everyday life. The balance between academics and sports has shaped her experience, and she specifically appreciates the Division III experience, where the emphasis is on maintaining an equilibrium between scholarly pursuits and athletic passions.
When asked about the factors that drew her to Bryn Mawr, Sarah highlights the sense of community and support, particularly in STEM fields, that a historically women's college brings. She feels the unique traditions at Bryn Mawr, and the allure of the beautiful campus, further solidified her decision. Moreover, the presence of scholarly athletes on the soccer team resonated with her, creating a perfect blend of academic rigor and athletic prowess.
Sarah acknowledges the support and mentorship she received throughout her research journey. Sharing the point that Joshua Harrington and Tony W. H. Wong played pivotal roles in guiding her through the intricacies of her project alongside fellow researchers Ryan Blau and Eliel Sosis. Bryn Mawr Professor Leslie Cheng, who assisted her in the REU application process, remains a pillar of support throughout her academic journey.
According to Sarah, being a scholar-athlete at Bryn Mawr means more than just a stereotypical balancing act. "It means that I am able to compete in a sport I love while still getting an excellent education," she states. Sarah genuinely values the Division III experience, where she finds the perfect harmony between her academic pursuits and her passion for soccer.
In a world that often compartmentalizes academics and athletics,
Sarah Lohrey stands as a testament to the harmonious coexistence of both, showcasing the transformative power of a well-rounded education at Bryn Mawr College as a scholar-athlete.
