BRYN MAWR, Pa. - Bryn Mawr hosted Immaculata in their first home match of the fall season on Friday as they looked to extend their win streak to three after taking down Rutgers-Camden and Penn-St.-Abington.
The match began with doubles. Fernanda Hurtado and Wynn Bryant were the first to step off the court, winning their match, 8-1. Next to finish were sophomore Lowrey West and junior Kelly Cole, who also won their match, 8-5. First doubles were played by Sophie Fenster and Kelli Eng, who put on a strong showing. Fenster came out with big serves as the Owls led 6-0. Although Immaculata broke the Owls' serve, Bryn Mawr broke right back. The Owls continued to return serve well throughout the set. Fenster ultimately took the game by hitting a high ball over the opposing volleyers' head, resulting in a ball in the net by Immaculata. The Owls led 7-1, needing only one more game to give Bryn Mawr a 3-0 lead going into singles. After a trading points, the Owls took the advantage to match point. Fenster saw the match in her eyes as she reached for a high ball at net, slamming it down on her opponent's side, just out of reach. Fenster and Eng took the third doubles match for Bryn Mawr (8-1).
Bryn Mawr continued their dominance in singles. One by one the Owls proudly stepped off their court, taking win after win against Immaculata. Sophie Fenster (6-0, 6-0), Kelli Eng (6-1, 6-1), Lilly Pfister (6-1, 6-3), and Gioanna Zhao (6-1, 6-0) finished their matches with grace. Although Bryn Mawr led 7-0 and had claimed the match over Immaculata, sophomore Lowrey West and junior Kelly Cole were still on the court. After winning the first set 6-4, West was up 4-0 in the second set. Serving at deuce at 4-2, West got unlucky as her opponent's shot barely dropped over the net, an unreachable ball for the Owl. West brushed off that point as she prepared for her opponent's serve. After losing a few points, West soon won the next two games to win the set and match. Cole was the last match to wrap up. After a tiebreak, which resulted in a first set win for Cole, the junior was up 5-3 in the second set. Serving for the match, Cole was prepared for a win. In an exciting end, she served an ace to take the match (7-6, 6-3), beating Immaculata 9-0.
The Owls wrapped up their fall season undefeated, hoping to carry this momentum into the spring season.
