BRYN MAWR, Pa. - The Owls tennis team was back in action Saturday for a quick turnaround after taking on #24 Johns Hopkins on Friday afternoon. Bryn Mawr was back at it today with a matchup against Gettysburg, and the Owls gave their Centennial Conference opponents a battle all day in a tough 9-0 loss.
Gettysburg picked up an early point in doubles with an 8-0 win at second doubles against Wynn Bryant and Lilly Pfister. However, the Owls put up a solid fight at the first and third doubles spots. Both Lowrey West and Fernanda Hurtado (first doubles) and Kelly Cole and Mary Rose Gilliand (third doubles) gave their opponents fits at times in their matches. The Bullets still came away with wins in those spots though, taking 8-4 victories in each of those matches.
In singles, the Owls continued to battle hard against some quality competition. Bryant rebounded from the tough doubles outing to win games in both sets of her first singles match, while Pfister did the same in her fifth singles match. Both Pfister and Hurtado at fourth singles were able to win four games in their opening singles set before their Gettysburg opponents ultimately pulled away to wins. Gilliand had a great first set as well in her sixth singles match, losing the opening frame just 6-3. West suffered a tough loss in her opening set, but bounced back in the second set, showing some impressive resilience in a 6-3 second-set loss. Cole also battled hard in her second singles matchup, winning a pair of games in her opening set.
The Owls will be back in action next week, as they will take to the road for another Centennial Conference matchup at Washington College on Wednesday afternoon.
