Bryn Mawr Puts Up Strong Performances in Matchup Against Dickinson

BRYN MAWR, Pa. – Less than 24 hours after a battle with Swarthmore on Friday afternoon, the Owls tennis team was right back in action on Saturday with another Centennial Conference test. Bryn Mawr welcomed Dickinson to campus on Saturday, with both the Owls and Red Devils looking for a big conference win late in the season. Bryn Mawr again put up a tough fight against their league foes, but it was Dickinson who ultimately came away victorious on the day with a 9-0 win.

The Red Devils got an early point at doubles with an 8-0 win at third doubles, despite the best efforts of the Owls' Mary Rose Gilliand and Megan Omolo. Wynn Bryant and Kelly Cole paired up at the Owls' top doubles spot facing a tough challenge against the big serves of Dickinson's Fierro and Goitz. Bryant and Cole fought hard in their matchup, winning a game midway through the set but ultimately losing an 8-1 decision. Bryn Mawr had perhaps the most success at second doubles, as Lowrey West and Lilly Pfister paired up and gave their Red Devils opponents all they could handle. Pfister and West won several games early on and continued to put pressure on their opponents, but Dickinson's duo ultimately claimed an 8-4 win at that spot as well.

The Red Devils continued to roll early on in singles play, clinching the win on the afternoon with victories at sixth and fifth singles. However, the Owls continued to give it their all in the rest of their singles contests. Bryant continued to deal with the powerful serve of Martine Fierro, frustrating her Dickinson opponent multiple times throughout a tense matchup at first singles. Fierro won out in the end however, earning a 6-0, 6-2 victory for the Red Devils. Lilly Pfister had a great first set, winning three games in the middle of the frame en route to a 6-3, 6-1 loss at fourth singles. West again put a solid shift in at third singles, winning a pair of games in each set.

Kelly Cole nearly pulled off a big win in her matchup at second singles for the Owls. The sophomore made her opponent work in the first set in a tough 6-3 loss, then cruised to a 6-0 win in the second frame to force her match to go the distance. The tiebreak would not go Cole's way however, as her Dickinson opponent won the breaker 10-3 to claim the win in the matchup.

The Owls will close out their campaign next week with two more contests. Bryn Mawr will welcome Haverford to campus on Wednesday for one final home match before hitting the road on Friday for a season-ending non-conference match at Rosemont.
