Bryn Mawr Topples Muhlenberg for First Conference Win of Season

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Bryn Mawr put together an excellent road performance earlier Tuesday afternoon against Muhlenberg, as the Owls grabbed an exciting 6-3 win over the Mules. The win is the first conference victory of the season for Bryn Mawr, and it is also the Owls' fifth consecutive victory over the Mules. Five of Bryn Mawr's six athletes earned at least a point in the victorious effort.

The Owls got the day started with a strong performance in doubles, with Lowrey West and Lilly Pfister grabbing a quick point for Bryn Mawr with an 8-3 win at second doubles. Muhlenberg canceled that out with an 8-4 victory at first doubles, leaving third doubles to decide that portion of the match. At third doubles, the Bryn Mawr duo of Fernanda Hurtado and Mary Rose Gilliand put on an epic performance, trading blows with their Muhlenberg competitors the whole way before heading into a tiebreak. Hurtado and Gilliand were able to bear down in that breaker, jumping ahead and winning the tiebreak 7-3 to ultimately claim an 8-7 win of their match.

With that lead in hand, Bryn Mawr continued to press their advantage in singles play. The Owls earned early wins at fourth and fifth singles thanks to strong performances from Hurtado and Pfister. Hurtado cruised by her opponent at fourth singles with a 6-2, 6-1 win while Pfister took a 6-3 win in her opening set at fifth singles before her opponent retired early in the second set. Those wins put Bryn Mawr a point away from taking their first conference win of the season, but Muhlenberg battled back with victories at second and sixth singles, making it a 4-3 match.

Wynn Bryant would be the one to get things done for the Owls by taking a 6-2, 6-3 win at first singles. The Owls sophomore was always in control in her match, grabbing the win to give Bryn Mawr their first win in April and first conference win since the spring of 2019. Lowrey West wrapped up the day with one more point for the Owls, outlasting her opponent in a tiebreak (7-2) in the opening set before rolling to a 6-4 win in the second frame to give Bryn Mawr the 6-3 final victory.

The Owls will be right back in action later this week, as they return home on Friday for a match against Swarthmore. That contest is set to start at 3:30 PM on the Bryn Mawr tennis courts.
