LANCASTER, Pa. - Bryn Mawr's tennis team was back on the road earlier Saturday for a contest at Franklin & Marshall. The Owls once again put up a strong fight against their Centennial Conference opponents, but the Diplomats ultimately came away with the 9-0 win on the day.
The Owls got things started in doubles, where they continued with their same pairings from the last few meets. All six Bryn Mawr players put together solid efforts in the doubles session, but in the end, Franklin & Marshall was able to earn three 8-0 wins in doubles to take a commanding 3-0 lead into the singles portion of the day.
In singles, every Owls player did a great job fighting through that early adversity to win at least one game in their match. Wynn Bryant suffered a tough 6-0 loss in her opening set at first singles, but battled back to take a game in the second set. Kelly Cole grabbed a game in her opening set at second singles before losing 6-0 in the second set. At third singles, Lowrey West won a game in each set, while Mary Rose Gilliand won a game in her opening set at sixth singles as well. Perhaps the most success for the Owls came at fourth and fifth singles. Fernanda Hurtado put on a gutty performance at fourth singles, giving her opponent a challenge all afternoon in a hard-fought 6-3, 6-2 loss. In fifth singles, Lilly Pfister accomplished nearly the same feat, forcing her opponent to work hard in a 6-2, 6-2 loss by the Owls first-year.
Bryn Mawr will return to action on Tuesday with another road trip in the league. This time the Owls will travel up to Muhlenberg for another Centennial Conference showdown, with the match slated to start at 4:00 PM in Allentown.
