BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Owls tennis team got their spring campaign underway earlier Sunday afternoon with a non-conference battle indoors at Moravian. Despite some solid play from Bryn Mawr, the Greyhounds managed to protect their home turf and come away with a 9-0 win on the day.
The hosts took a quick 2-0 lead thanks to an 8-3 win at first doubles and an 8-2 victory at second doubles. The Bryn Mawr pairing of Wynn Bryant and Mary Rose Gilliand gave their opponents a battle at third doubles. Bryant and Gilliand jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in that matchup, but the Moravian duo was able to battle back and take an 8-7 (7-4) win in tiebreaks to sweep the doubles results.
Bryant and Kelly Cole did all they could to keep the overall match alive at first and second singles, but Moravian claimed 6-3, 6-2 and 6-0, 6-1 wins in those two matches to clinch the victory on the day. Lowrey West put together a strong first set for the Owls at third singles, but ultimately suffered a tough 6-4, 6-2 defeat. Fernanda Hurtado did the same at fourth singles, also winning four games in the opening set before losing a 6-4, 6-0 decision. Lilly Pfister and Gilliand both put up good fights, but each lost their matchups at fifth and sixth singles.
Bryn Mawr will return to action on Friday afternoon, as the Owls will play their first home match of the spring. The team will welcome Cabrini to campus on Friday, with the two teams set to face off at 4:00 PM.
