Red Devils Squeak By Bryn Mawr In Tight Contest

Box Score

BRYN MAWR, Pa. – The Owls soccer team returned to Applebee Field earlier Saturday afternoon for a contest against Dickinson. Coming off a big win over Muhlenberg earlier this week, Bryn Mawr was hoping to carry some momentum into today's Centennial Conference showdown. However, it was the Red Devils who ultimately took the win, using a lone goal in the second half to secure a 1-0 win on the day. The Owls had several decent chances throughout the contest, but Dickinson outshot Bryn Mawr 13-6 en route to the victory. Grecia Prieto made five saves in goal for the Owls in another fine defensive performance from Bryn Mawr.

The Owls got a great opportunity right out of the gate, as Bryn Mawr appeared to catch Dickinson flat-footed in the opening couple of minutes. The hosts had a long stretch of possession in the offensive end early on, with Elizabeth Hummel getting a great chance at the end of that stretch. The senior forward ended up inside the box with the ball at her feet, but her shot from the left went just over the outstretched arms of Dickinson goalkeeper Sophia Kavulich and the crossbar as well. Hummel and Elizabeth Kiely would each get another shot off within the first 15 minutes, but both came from distance and either went wide or were blocked. Dickinson eventually began to gain more of a foothold in the contest, with the Red Devils getting off four shots of their own in the first half. Prieto made the only two stops she needed to in the half though, and the two teams ended a benign first half with the game still scoreless.

The two sides continued to find it tough to generate offensive chances as the second half opened. Paige Mastripolito had an early shot from distance blocked, while Dickinson had a couple of chances go harmlessly wide or get saved by Prieto. However, the visitors earned a couple of corners midway through the half, and it was on the second of those opportunities that they would score the go-ahead goal. Lexie Greene stepped up and sent a perfect ball into the mix, where Charlotte Glancey met it with a header near the penalty spot. Glancey's header pass was perfect, redirecting the ball across the face of goal towards the far post on the left where Lauren Bracken had a wide open header of her own. Bracken easily guided the ball into the back of the net, giving Dickinson a 1-0 lead.

The Owls tried their best to reshape and reorganize, sending more players forward to try to press for a tying goal. Hummel got the lone chance for Bryn Mawr, as the Owls worked the ball into the top of the box where the senior forward gained possession. She tried to flick a ball forward towards the net to find another Owl making an attack, but Kavulich sprinted off her line to collect the ball and shut down the chance. That proved to be the best opportunity Bryn Mawr would get. Dickinson hit both the crossbar and the post in the final ten minutes of play, but they would also fail to get any additional shots past the Bryn Mawr defense, and so the Red Devils walked away with the slim 1-0 win on the day.

Bryn Mawr will now get a week off from competition before getting back in action next Saturday on the road with a game at Washington College. Game time in Chestertown, Maryland is set for 4:00 PM on October 23rd.
