BRYN MAWR, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr tennis team picked up another big win in dominant fashion earlier Saturday afternoon, as the Owls toppled McDaniel College 8-1 on the Bryn Mawr tennis courts. Bryn Mawr completely controlled play from the get-go, winning all three doubles matches to set the tone for a strong performance in singles as well. Bryn Mawr did not even lose a game in five of their nine matches on the day en route to the stifling victory.
Bryn Mawr kicked the day off with easy 8-0 wins in both second and third doubles. Jennifer Laske and Christina Xue paired up at the second spot, and they worked wonders against their McDaniel opponents to complete an easy "shutout" win. Francesca Caramazza and Caroline Horvatits matched that result at third doubles as well, leaving the first doubles duo of Lizzie Siegle and Mariam Haider to go for the clean sweep of the opening matches. Siegle and Haider have worked well together all spring, and that certainly did not change in today's match. The top McDaniel pairing played some solid tennis, but Siegle and Haider battled through a few tough patches to ultimately claim a relatively painless 8-5 win.
The good results continued in singles play for Bryn Mawr as well, with the Owls winning the fourth, fifth, and sixth singles matches all without dropping a game. Laske, Xue, and Abbygail Brewster were responsible for those impressive results, as all three maintained focus and played very precisely throughout their entire matches to each earn 6-0, 6-0 wins at their positions. Lizzie Siegle and Caroline Horvatits each also earned wins at first and third singles. Siegle got into a bit of a battle with her opponent at the top singles spot, but after winning the opening set 6-3, Siegle breezed through the second frame easily to clinch a 6-3, 6-0 win. Horvatits had a similar result in her match, where the first set was a bit more of a back-and-forth affair before the sophomore won that frame and then sailed through the next set to claim a 6-4, 6-2 win. The only McDaniel victory on the day came at second singles, where Mariam Haider once again got into another drawn out battle for the Owls. Ultimately, the senior came close in both sets, but was unable to overcome some strong play from her opponent in a tough 7-5, 6-4 loss.
The win is the Owls' sixth victory of the season, tying their highest win total in a season in the past four years. Bryn Mawr will go for a new high when they get back on the court on Tuesday, which will be their final home match of the season. The Owls will welcome Ursinus to campus for another Centennial Conference battle, with that match slated to begin at 4:00 PM on the Bryn Mawr tennis courts.
