Owls Clinch First Win of Season With Inspired Performance at Rosemont

Box Score

ROSEMONT, Pa. - With two teams still looking for their first win of the season facing off tonight in Rosemont, fans were sure to see a barnburner, and boy did Bryn Mawr step up and deliver. The Owls volleyball squad faced a difficult 2-1 deficit in tonight's match against the Ravens, a spot where a lesser team would've folded. However, Bryn Mawr knuckled down and closed things out with gutty performances in the fourth and fifth sets to take a 3-2 victory out of the grasp of Rosemont on the night. Senior Caroline Cosby was the key player on the night for Bryn Mawr as she registered a career-high 16 kills to help lead the Owls to victory.

Bryn Mawr started strong in the match with a solid performance in the opening set. The Owls jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead in the frame, with five of those six points being kills by Cosby. Bryn Mawr was able to continue stretching their lead out to 10-4 and 17-10 thanks mostly to numerous Rosemont errors. Later in the frame, Sienna Burnett and Camille Baechler got into the action with kills of their own, but it was Cosby who deservingly closed things out for the Owls with one last kill to give them the opening set in 25-17 fashion.

The Owls looked to carry that positive momentum into the second frame, and did so in the early goings. A pair of kills from Burnett and a service ace from Kira Ogoshi helped the visitors get out in front by an 8-4 tally. However, that would be the largest advantage Bryn Mawr would hold in the frame. Rosemont went on a great run midway through to vault back out in front 12-10. In a precursor of what was to come the rest of the evening, both sides swapped leads throughout the rest of the set. Bryn Mawr battled back to the lead and held it as late as 21-19. Unfortunately for the Owls, it was the Ravens who had the final say in the set, as the hosts won six of the next eight points to win the frame 25-23 and even the match back up at 1-1.

The third set went bad from the start for Bryn Mawr, as they fell behind 7-2 after a five-point run from the hosts early. In fact, Rosemont posted three runs of five points or greater in the set, ultimately leaping out in front 19-8. The Owls closed some ground in the end, but Rosemont still took an easy 25-15 win in the set to gain a 2-1 advantage in the match.

With their backs now against the wall, Bryn Mawr desparately needed a win to force a decisive fifth set. Things didn't start great in the fourth as the Owls fell behind early, but a six-point run midway through pushed the visitors out in front. Allie Nagelski sparked that run on her own, as the senior posted five straight service aces, giving Bryn Mawr a 13-8 lead. They would make that advantage stand up the rest of the way, with a kill from Cosby sealing the deal and hinging the match on one final set to 15.

The Owls fell behind 2-0 early in the final frame, but immediately jumped back out in front 3-2 thanks to a Rosemont error sandwiched between two kills from Sarah Whitten. The Ravens got back ahead 6-4, but then the Owls ran off seven unanswered points to virtually seal the deal. Rosemont helped the Bryn Mawr cause with numerous errors, but Burnett and Cosby registered big kills themselves to give the Owls that big lead. That wide margin definitely paid off, too, as the hosts would close back to an 11-11 tie, but Bryn Mawr's final surge won the Owls the match. Cosby was the major factor at the end, as she registered an ace, a kill, and an assist on Ogoshi's final kill of the set to give Bryn Mawr the 15-13 win and send the Owls home with their first victory of the season.

Bryn Mawr will look to capitalize on the positive momentum when they get back in action this weekend. The Owls will be on the road in Massachusetts as they take part in the Smith College Invitational. Bryn Mawr will take on Husson on Friday night before turning around and facing Smith and Albertus Magnus on Saturday.
