Owls Take Early Lead at Ursinus, But Late Comeback Gives Bears Win

Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr Volleyball team put together perhaps their best set of the season to kick off Wednesday night's match at Ursinus. The Owls made just one error in the first frame and tallied 13 kills to take a big 1-0 lead over the Bears after one set. Unfortunately for Bryn Mawr, that would be the lone set that they could get on the night, as Ursinus stormed back to win the next three and take the match by a 3-1 margin. Camille Baechler and Caroline Cosby led the way for Bryn Mawr on the offensive side of the ball, as each racked up eleven kills on the evening. Allie Nagelski once again had a strong defensive game, tallying 22 digs and adding two aces in the match. Ursinus was championed by Allison Raff, whose 18-kill performance and .312 hitting percentage proved unstoppable on the evening.

Bryn Mawr (2-9, 0-3 CC) started out strong in the opening set, using kills from Baechler and Cosby and two service aces from Sarah Whitten to take a 4-3 lead in the early going. The two teams traded points back and forth over the next few minutes, with neither side going ahead by more than one. Then, with things tied at 9-9, the Owls made their run. Whitten and Baechler threw down back-to-back kills, and then an ace from Nagelski forced Ursinus into a timeout. Later, Baechler's aggressiveness once again paid off, as the sophomore tomahawked another kill into the court to put Bryn Mawr ahead 17-12. However, Ursinus (7-5, 1-3 CC) battled all the way back to tie things up eventually at 18-all. It was all a matter of who would blink first in the opening set, and on this night it was the Bears. Bryn Mawr closed out their impressive, nearly error-free first set with a 7-2 run, thanks to two more kills from Whitten, one from Baechler and another from senior captain Caroline Cosby. With that 25-20 win, the Owls went up 1-0 in the match.

The Owls took that momentum into the early part of the second set as well, taking a 6-4 lead thanks to a pair of kills from Cosby and another from Baechler. However, Ursinus finally bowed up and managed to get a lead in the set, and the hosts would make it stand up from there. They would take the second frame 25-17 and tie the match back up.

The third set would prove to be the tipping point on the night, and it played out in a similar manner to the first. Neither side could get any major advantage well through the middle part of the set. Bryn Mawr found themselves trailing 14-11 halfway through, but the Owls gritted their teeth and were able to climb back into the proceedings with aplomb. Several errors by the Bears helped in that effort, and then a great set by Nolan Julien led to another terrific kill from Cosby, and the Owls got back in front 16-14. Ursinus pulled back ahead with a 7-0 run, but Bryn Mawr continued to fight. Several more errors and another Nagelski ace forced a timeout from the hosts, but it was just a little too late for the Owls. Ursinus wound up winning the set by a score of 25-21, putting them in the driver's seat the rest of the way. They put together a one-error set of their own in the fourth, while the Owls were only able to net four kills in the frame, and Ursinus ultimately was able to close out the match in 3-1 fashion.

Despite the outcome, Bryn Mawr still played a strong match and will look to keep the positive momentum rolling as they flip the calendar to October. The Owls will kick off the new month with a trip to F&M on Saturday, with that game slated to start at 12:00 PM. Bryn Mawr will then return home to the Class of 1958 Gymnasium for a two match homestand next week.
