Volleyball Celebrates Senior Day With Final Tri-Match of Season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BRYN MAWR, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr volleyball team played their final weekend matches of the season earlier Saturday afternoon, as they hosted one final tri-match in 2016. The Owls welcomed Johns Hopkins and Arcadia to campus for three matches on the day, and they also celebrated the careers of their three senior stars as well. A packed house was on hand to witness Caroline Cosby, Allie Nagelski, and Lauren Shue play some of their final matches on the Owls court on Saturday, and they did so in very strong fashion. Despite falling 3-0 in both matches on the day, all three seniors showed tremendous resolve and skill all-around the whole day.

Bryn Mawr (3-16, 0-9 CC) kicked off their day by facing off against Johns Hopkins in the opening match of the tri-match. Despite the long trip up from Baltimore, the Blue Jays got off to a quick start in the opening frame. However, Bryn Mawr hung in early, with a kill and an ace from Cosby keeping the Owls close. Later, Sienna Burnett also got in on the action, as both she and Cosby notched more kills. They were fighting a losing battle, though, as Hopkins used a fairly clean opening set to take a 25-14 win of the frame.

The Owls got off to a much stronger start in the second set. Several Blue Jays attack errors, another ace from Cosby, and a kill from Sarah Whitten got Bryn Mawr out to a 7-6 lead in the frame. A bit later, Whitten tallied an ace of her own to extend the Owls lead to 10-8. Unfortunately, it would be the highest the Bryn Mawr lead would get in the game, as Johns Hopkins would eventually get back ahead and then close out the frame on a 10-2 run to win the set 25-16. That momentum seemed to propel them to an easy victory in the third set as well, as the Blue Jays tallied 15 kills to just two from the Owls. The visitors opened the set with a 15-0 run and never looked back, as two kills from Camille Baechler just weren't enough to faze the Blue Jays. Ultimately, the visitors earned the 3-0 win in the match with a 25-8 victory in the third set.

Bryn Mawr found much better headway in their second match of the day as they took on the Knights of Arcadia. Despite a strong start from the visitors, Bryn Mawr stayed right with them thanks to an ace from Nagelski and a kill by Baechler. Later, Caroline Cosby continued her impressive Senior Day performance with two more kills to keep Bryn Mawr within striking distance. Cosby put in a terrific effort through all six sets for the Owls on the day, carrying the team at time through some rougher stretches. She added three more kills late in the opening set against Arcadia, but it wasn't enough to stop the Knights, who started the match off with a 25-15 win.

In a similar fashion as the earlier match, the Owls once again found some good success in the second set. Cosby tallied yet another ace, and that sparked a run which included kills by Baechler and Jessie Zong to give Bryn Mawr a 9-7 lead out of the gates. Cosby notched another kill a bit later to make it 10-8 for the Owls. Unfortunately, that was the latest lead that Bryn Mawr would hold in the match, as a 12-3 run from Arcadia helped the visitors salt away the set in 25-14 fashion. Looking for a big comeback to turn the Senior Day match around, the Owls spun their wheels out of the gate in the third set, falling behind 16-3. Whitten and Cosby once again provided an offensive spark for the Owls, with their kills starting a 9-2 run for Bryn Mawr. However, Arcadia was able to right the ship and hang on for a 25-13 win in the end.

It was a solid day for the Owls seniors nonetheless. Allie Nagelski totaled 23 digs on the day in yet another classic performance for Bryn Mawr's longtime libero. Cosby led all Owls scorers with 11 kills on the day, and she also tallied three service aces as well. Shue was also a big part of the Bryn Mawr defensive effort, as she chipped in 12 digs on the day.

Despite celebrating Senior Day today, the Owls still have one more home match this season, and it comes on Tuesday, October 25th. Bryn Mawr will face off against Swarthmore at home that day, with the match slated to start at 7:00 PM. The Owls will then close out their season next Saturday at the Penn State Abington tri-match.
