Owls Face Off Against Haverford in Crosstown Battle

Box Score

HAVERFORD, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr volleyball team took the short trip down Lancaster Ave earlier Wednesday night for a conference tilt against their crosstown rivals Haverford. Despite another great defensive effort by the Owls, including 11 digs by senior Allie Nagelski, it was Haverford who ultimately took the win on the day. The Fords used 38 kills to cruise to a 3-0 win over Bryn Mawr, who was led once again by Caroline Cosby and Camille Baechler with four kills apiece.

Bryn Mawr (3-14, 0-8 CC) got out to a solid start in the opening frame, taking a 3-1 lead early thanks to a kill from Sarah Whitten and two errors from the Fords. Later, an ace from Whitten and Cosby's first kill of the night gave the Owls a 6-5 lead. However, Haverford (13-11, 4-3 CC) battled their way back in the set, ultimately jumping ahead 14-8. Bryn Mawr certainly did not fold, though, going on a 4-0 run that included a big service ace from Cosby. That drew the Owls back within two, but unfortunately, that was as close as they would get. Haverford closed out the frame on an 11-4 run and took the lead with a 25-16 win of the set.

The second set went somewhat different from the first, as Haverford jumped out to a big lead early on. Facing a 9-2 deficit, the Owls knuckled down and started to get themselves back in the set. Several attack and service errors from the Fords helped, and then a kill by Baechler got Bryn Mawr back within two at 10-12. However, Haverford would once again pull away, stretching out their lead to 10 at 21-11. The Owls tried one last-ditch rally to get back in the set, with kills by Cosby and Whitten getting the visitors as close as 16-24, but the Fords closed out the frame on the very next point to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

With their figurative backs to the wall now in the match, Bryn Mawr did a great job coming out strong in the third set. The Owls used kills from Cosby, Kira Ogoshi, and Sienna Burnett to stay neck-and-neck with Haverford, with the set tied 6-6 early. Haverford started to pull away midway through the frame, but another kill from Baechler on a great set by Ogoshi kept the Owls close. Ultimately, it simply wasn't enough to handle the diverse offensive attack the Fords boasted, as the hosts won the frame 25-14 to take a 3-0 win of the match.

Bryn Mawr will look to bounce back from tonight's tough result when they get back in action on Saturday. The Owls will host Johns Hopkins and Arcadia in the Class of 1958 Gymnasium for one last tri-match in the 2016 season. Bryn Mawr will take on the Blue Jays first at 12:00 PM before facing off against the Knights in a "Senior Day" match at 4:00 PM, with the two traveling teams set to face each other at 2:00 PM in between.
