Box Score BRYN MAWR, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr volleyball team picked up their first home win of the season earlier Thursday night, and did so in record-setting fashion. The Owls posted their third highest attack percentage in a single match ever and also used 19 service aces (fifth-most ever in a single match) to romp to a 3-0 (25-11, 25-6, 25-12) victory over the Ravens of Rosemont College. Sarah Gates notched six kills on the night to lead the Owls, who made just three attack errors all night in the match. Rosemont's Morgan Rollins led the Ravens with six kills of her own on the evening.
Bryn Mawr (2-4) got the offense rolling early, jumping out to a quick 10-2 lead in the first set of the match. Megan Kilmer notched the first kill of the night to get the Owls on the board, but kills by Sarah Gates, Noemi Moreno, and Caroline Cosby also helped extend Bryn Mawr's lead. A pair of errors helped Rosemont close back within five and forced Owls head coach Nicole Reiley to call a quick timeout. Whatever was said in the team huddle must have made a big impression, as the Owls immediately responded with an 11-1 run that sealed the set. Kilmer helped finish the way things started, as her service ace closed out the set at 25-11.
The second set went even worse for the visitors. Rosemont made seven attack errors and were only able to collect six points in the frame. Bryn Mawr, on the other hand, posted a .700 attack percentage in the set, making seven kills on ten attempts with no errors. Time after time, Bryn Mawr was able to collect the ball defensively and set up their attackers with great opportunities in the set. With the score at 22-6, Noemi Moreno used a great set by Delia Landers to find a hole in the defense for a kill. Then, Nolan Julien recorded a service ace, and the Owls closed out the set at 25-6 on a block by Cosby and Lauren Shue.
The Owls were almost as efficient in the third and final set, once again making no attacking errors in the frame. Rosemont also put together a good third set of their own, with six kills helping the team stick with Bryn Mawr a little better. The Owls at one point led 12-6, but the Ravens used a bit of a run to claw back within five at 16-11. However, Bryn Mawr bowed up over the last third of the set, with kills by Gates and Rachel Ofili helping the Owls close out the match with a 9-1 run.
With the win, the Owls move to 2-4 on the year. After a day to rest and recover, Bryn Mawr will be back in action on Saturday afternoon. The Owls will travel to Frederick, Maryland to face off against both Hood and Notre Dame (Md.) in a Saturday tri-match. The day kicks off with Bryn Mawr facing the Blazers at 10:00 AM.
