Swarthmore, Pa. - The Bryn Mawr tennis squad kicked off a busy stretch of contests earlier Wednesday evening with a matchup against Swarthmore. The Owls battled hard, but the Garnet seemed to have their number most of the day, as the hosts held serve for an 8-1 victory.
Bryn Mawr (1-9, 0-4 Cent.) got their lone win at the second singles spot. Lizzie Siegle played a dramatic first set against Anna Scheibmeir. The Owls freshman took the frame by virtue of a solid performance in a tiebreak, knocking off Scheibmeir by a 7-5 tally in the extra session to take the first set by a 7-6 score. After that great performance, Siegle then went on to dominate the second set, ultimately earning the victory with a 6-2 win in that frame.
The other four of the top five singles matches were not as successful for the Owls. In fact, Bryn Mawr was only able to win three games combined in those four matches, as Melina Koukoutchos, Kendall Baller, and Tirsa Delate all lost 6-1, 6-0 in some fashion, while Mariam Haider dropped her contest 6-0, 6-0. At sixth singles, Jennifer Laske did play a very competitive match. The freshman dropped a hard-fought first set by a score of 6-4, and then nearly forced a second-set tiebreak, but ultimately fell by a 7-5 score.
The doubles matches played out in a similar manner, with only the team of Haider and Siegle able to win any games in an 8-2 loss. The squads of Koukoutchos and Baller and Eram Haider and Delate both lost 8-0.
The Owls will get a brief respite tomorrow before getting right back in action on Friday afternoon. Bryn Mawr will travel to Alvernia University for a Friday matchup, with the contest set to start at 4:00 PM.
