Box Score BRYN MAWR, Pa. - It was a roller coaster affair in the Class of 1958 Gymnasium earlier Saturday afternoon. The Bryn Mawr volleyball team faced an early challenge in today's match against Gettysburg College after dropping the first set. The Owls buckled down and put together some fantastic rallies to come back and win the first set, and then take a quick 9-1 lead in the third. However, the Bullets managed to respond in kind, coming back from that deficit themselves to ultimately win that set and the next one as well to clinch the 3-1 road victory. Rachel Ofili led the Owls with 13 kills on the afternoon, while Noemi Moreno added another 12. Zoe Holman had an impressive 31 assists for Bryn Mawr. Gettysburg got yet another performance out of Laura Bergin, as the Centennial Conference kills leader posted 14 kills on 54 attacks to lead all scorers in the match.
Gettysburg (12-10, 3-3 CC) took control of the match early on with a 25-14 win in the first set. Bryn Mawr (6-13, 1-6 CC) hung with the Bullets early on, but the visitors went on a 17-7 run to close out the frame in solid fashion. Gettysburg carried that momentum into the early part of the second set as well, jumping out to a quick 4-2 lead. However, Bryn Mawr continued to battle, and the Owls finally managed to shake the bad mojo as that second set went on. Kills by Caroline Cosby and Rachel Ofili helped Bryn Mawr take a 7-6 lead in the game, and then later on, the Owls went on a 7-1 run to take control of the set. Ofili, Sarah Gates, and Noemi Moreno all notched kills in that run, and Ofili even chipped in a service ace as well. Gettysburg took a timeout to try and stop the Bryn Mawr momentum, but it was too little, too late for the visitors. The Bullets closed to within 20-22, but Bryn Mawr held off the attack and closed out the set at 25-22 on another kill from Ofili.
At that time, it appeared all the momentum had swung back in favor of the Owls. Bryn Mawr jumped out of the gates in the third set to take leads of 6-0 and 9-1, and Gettysburg looked stunned. However, a Bullets timeout seemed to calm the visitors, and they went on an 8-0 run of their own to tie the set back up. Bryn Mawr continued to maintain a small lead most of the way through, but Gettysburg finally retook the advantage at 16-15. The Owls tried to keep up, but the Bullets did just enough to pull away and close out the set with a 25-22 win. Losing that set after having such a big lead early on seemed to take the last wind out of the Owls sails, as Gettysburg pulled away to another 25-14 win in the fourth set to take the match in 3-1 fashion.
Bryn Mawr will now get a few days rest before returning to action on Wednesday for another Centennial Conference contest. The Owls will host Haverford College in the Class of 1958 Gymnasium on the 21st for a big league match against their crosstown rivals. Wednesday's match is set to tip off at 7:00 PM.
