Box Score 2 Bethlehem, Pa. – Bryn Mawr's volleyball squad took their two-match winning streak on the road earlier Saturday afternoon to the Moravian Tri-Match. The Owls faced some stiff competition in the Greyhounds, a leader in the Landmark Conference, and Cabrini, winner of the CSAC last season. Both sides proved too tough to tame for the Yellow and Black, as Bryn Mawr fell in 0-3 fashion to both the Greyhounds and the Cavaliers. Rachel Ofili tallied 23 kills on the day while Noemi Moreno added another 14.
Bryn Mawr (7-6) opened up the day with their match against the host Greyhounds and immediately fell behind in the first set. Moravian (8-8) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, and throughout the rest of the set the Greyhounds extended that lead. The Owls trailed 15-21 in the late stages of the set before stringing together a run to get back in the match. A Moravian service error gave Bryn Mawr the first point, and on their serve, the Owls benefitted from three attack errors. Avary Taylor tallied a kill as well, and suddenly Bryn Mawr trailed just 21-20. However, the Greyhounds won four of the next five points, closing out the set 25-21 on a kill by Taylor Kornmann.
Bryn Mawr managed to build some momentum early in the second set, taking an 11-8 lead over Moravian. Ellen Chiu, Noemi Moreno and Sarah Gates all registered kills to help the Owls take the lead, along with several errors by the hosts. However, the Greyhounds responded in the middle of the set with a three-point run to tie things at 11-all. From there, both sides seemingly traded points back-and-forth, with neither being able to build more than a two-point lead. Bryn Mawr had leads of 14-12 and 15-14 before trailing 20-21 late in the game. However, Moravian closed out the set with four straight kills, two from Mary Zacher, to win the second set 25-20. The Owls strung together their best attack percentage of the match in the third set, tallying ten kills in 23 attack attempts for a .304 percentage. Rachel Ofili racked up four of those, while Danielle Preziuso and Avary Taylor added two and Moreno and Chiu recorded one apiece. The problem for Bryn Mawr was that Moravian also recorded their highest attack percentage of the match: 13 kills on 24 attempts with just three errors made for a whopping .417 success rate in the set. Bryn Mawr went ahead 3-1 in the first four points, but Moravian went on a seven-point run to take an 8-3 lead, and the Greyhounds would not look back from there. The hosts took the set in 25-16 fashion and thus claimed the 3-0 match victory.
The second match saw Bryn Mawr take on the Cavaliers of Cabrini College. The Owls actually held a 7-6 lead in the first set of the match, thanks to kills by Ofili and Moreno along with numerous attack errors by the Cavaliers. However, Cabrini soon cleaned up their play and eventually moved out to a 22-16 lead. Bryn Mawr attempted to start a comeback on a kill by Sarah gates and two more Cavs attack errors, but that effort was quickly snuffed out. Cabrini held on to win the set and take a 1-0 lead in the match. In the second frame, the Owls once again ran out to an early lead. After several service aces from Danielle Preziuso and Sarah Gates, Bryn Mawr held a 10-7 lead in the set. Cabrini battled to take back the lead, but back-to-back kills from Ofili put the Owls back in front 12-11. However, the Cavaliers won the next seven points to take a big lead in the frame. Bryn Mawr tried to put together another comeback, but that six-point lead was simply too large to overcome. The closest the Yellow and Black would get was down 20-23, but Cabrini closed out the set on a kill by Chelsea Jones.
Now down 2-0 in the match, Bryn Mawr put themselves in an early hole in the third set. Cabrini raced ahead by a 6-1 score, but the Owls proved their resilience by digging their way back into the set. Ofili continued to dominate the net area for the Owls, and kills from Preziuso and Avary Taylor got Bryn Mawr in front by a 10-9 score. The Owls would continue to play solid volleyball to stay neck-and-neck with the Cavaliers, and the team actually held a 23-22 lead in the set thanks to another kill from Moreno. However, Cabrini managed to win the next three points of the set, with Bryn Mawr's ninth attack error of the frame closing out the frame and handing the Cavaliers a 3-0 match victory.
With the losses, Bryn Mawr moves to 7-6 on the season. The Owls will return to the friendly confines of the Class of 1958 Gym for their next contest. Bryn Mawr will host Cedar Crest, another squad out of the competitive CSAC. The Owls will face the Falcons on Tuesday night on the Bryn Mawr campus, with the match slated to tip off at 7:00 PM.
