Box Score Bryn Mawr, Pa. – The Owls volleyball squad returned to the hardcourt with a vengeance earlier Thursday night. After a 2-2 trip to the 2014 Seven Sisters Championship last weekend, Bryn Mawr got an extremely positive result tonight with a dominating 3-0 win over the University of Valley Forge. Junior Rachel Ofili tallied 12 kills and 5.5 blocks in the match, while Danielle Preziuso assisted on 25 kills for the Owls.
After a three-day break, Bryn Mawr (7-4) showed a little bit of rust early on in the first set, as the Patriots moved out to a 7-6 lead. However, the Owls quickly dispensed with any further pleasantries and put together a seven-point run to take a 13-7 lead. Ellen Chiu started that off with a kill, and after a Patriots attack error, Avary Taylor netted two kills of her own. Ofili followed that with her second and third kills of the match, in between another UVF attack error. This quick run allowed the Owls to coast out to a comfortable lead through the remainder of the first set. Bryn Mawr won eleven of the final fifteen points, capping off their 25-15 first set victory with a big kill from Sarah Gates.
The Yellow and Black continued to pour it on in the second set. Valley Forge (5-6) took a 5-2 lead early before Bryn Mawr went on an incredible 16-point run to take the air out of the Patriots' sails. Eight of those points came on kills from Ofili, Noemi Moreno, and Gates, along with three service aces from Chiu. Gates tallied two more kills in a set-closing four point run to give the Owls the second frame by a smashing 25-8 score. That momentum carried into the third set as well, as Bryn Mawr continued to put together solid attacks. The Owls built leads of 13-6 and 18-9 before closing the third set, and the match, out on another seven-point run. Three Patriots attack errors contributed to that, along with another ace from Chiu and kills by Moreno and Ofili. When the dust finally settled, the Owls had collected a 25-11 set win and polished off a 3-0 match victory in under an hour.
Bryn Mawr will look to continue their solid play into the weekend, as the Owls head to Bethlehem for the Moravian College Tri-Match. The Yellow and Black will take on the Greyhounds in the first match of the day at 11:00 AM before facing off against Cabrini College at 1:00 PM on Saturday.
