Volleyball Closes Out Seven Sisters Meet With Sunday Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. – The 2014 Seven Sisters volleyball championship came to a close earlier Sunday afternoon, with Bryn Mawr once again splitting a pair of matches on the day. The Owls dropped their morning match against Wellesley by a score of 0-3 before returning the favor to Smith in the afternoon with a 3-0 sweep. Rachel Ofili led the Yellow and Black with 23 total kills on the day, while senior Danielle Preziuso tallied 50 assists in the two games.

The Owls (6-4) looked to carry some momentum into their first match of the day, but ran into a steamroller in the form of Wellesley (6-2). The Blue, who ultimately won the whole tournament by finishing 4-0 on the weekend, were simply too strong to handle. In game one of today's match, Bryn Mawr actually managed to tie the Blue at 12-12 thanks to kills from Ofili and Megan Kilmer and a Wellesley attack error. However, the Blue rattled off eight straight points to take a 20-12 lead and ultimately coast to a 25-14 win of the set. In the second frame, Wellesley ran out to 13-4 and 20-9 leads before Bryn Mawr made a late charge in the set. Bryn Mawr won 10 out of 12 straight points, thanks to numerous attack errors from the Blue, along with kills from Ofili and Avary Taylor. However, Wellesley held on in the end, closing out the set in 25-21 fashion to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

The third frame saw Bryn Mawr take control early, as kills from Taylor and Ofili helped Bryn Mawr to an 8-5 lead over the Blue. However, Wellesley got back ahead a few minutes later by an 11-10 score and they didn't look back. The Blue won eight out of the last nine points, with a kill by Alina Mota ending things and handing Wellesley the 3-0 match victory.

Bryn Mawr got a chance to regroup and end the tournament on a positive note in their final match of the day against Smith. The Owls won five straight points early in the first set to take a 9-5 lead and never looked back. Ofili alone tallied five kills, while Sarah Gates, Taylor, Noemi Moreno and Preziuso all added kills as well to help the Owls take home the first set in 25-20 fashion. The second set was more of the same, as the Yellow and Black won the first five points. Smith actually registered 16 kills in the set, but Bryn Mawr did just enough to squeak by with a 25-23 set two victory. The Owls closed out the match with a strong third set performance. Bryn Mawr racked up 15 kills, their most of the match, while limiting Smith to just eight kills of their own. Sarah Gates closed out the 25-20 set win with a great kill to give Bryn Mawr the 3-0 match victory.

Wellesley earned the championship by finishing the weekend with a 4-0 record, while Vassar took second by finishing 3-1. Bryn Mawr's 2-2 record gave them third place, with Smith taking fourth and Mount Holyoke finishing fifth. Bryn Mawr's Rachel Ofili and Danielle Preziuso were named to the All-Tournament team, with Wellesley's Sydney Carfagnor taking tournament MVP honors.

The Owls will take a well-deserved three-day break before getting back in action on Thursday night. Bryn Mawr will play host to Valley Forge Christian College at 7:00 PM in the Schwartz Center.
