CHESTERTOWN, Md. – It has been 15 long years since Bryn Mawr has defeated Washington College in tennis action, but that all changed Wednesday afternoon as the Owls downed the Shorewomen 6-3. The last time the Owls won was in 1998 when they sneaked by for the 5-4 win.
Bryn Mawr took an early 2-1 lead following double action. The No. 2 team of sophomore Melina Koukoutchos and senior Jenny Vogel blanked Emily Evan and Amy Stevens 8-0 to get the Owls on the board first. From the third doubles position, sophomore classmates Molly MacDougall and Kendall Baller won 8-1 over Monica Benitez and Tricia Valerio.
The Owls took over the match in singles play as they picked-up four individual wins. Leading the way was sophomore Tirsa Delate who defeated Benitez in straight sets 6-0, 6-0, from the sixth position. Baller won her No. 5 match 6-3, 6-0, as Bryn Mawr took a 4-2 lead in the match. Koukoutchos was a 6-2, 6-1, winner over Stevens from the fourth spot while senior Eliza Perocchi defeated Evan 6-3, 6-1, form the No. 3 position.
All-time, Bryn Mawr is 2-20 against Washington in a series that began in the 1988-89 season.
