Box Score Bryn Mawr, Pa. – The Bryn Mawr volleyball squad took on the Blue Jays of Johns Hopkins earlier Saturday afternoon in the Schwartz Athletic Center. Unfortunately for the Owls, Hopkins came in like a freight train, carrying a five-match winning streak into today's contest. Bryn Mawr was simply unable to slow that momentum down, falling straight sets to the Blue Jays by scores of 25-12, 25-17 and 25-17. Rachel Ofili led the Owls with seven of their seventeen kills on the day.
Johns Hopkins (15-10, 7-2 Cent.) controlled the first set from the very start, jumping out to a 4-0 lead right out of the gate. By the middle part of the match, the Owls (10-14, 1-8 Cent.) found themselves trailing by a 14-7 margin. Caroline Cosby helped Bryn Mawr start a four-point run of their own to try and climb back in the set, but Hopkins promptly ended those plans, ending the set on a 9-0 run themselves to take the frame 25-12.
Bryn Mawr did a much better job of keeping themselves in the game in the second set. Finding themselves down 5-2 early, the Owls knotted the game back up with a three point run. Megan Kilmer started that with a kill, which Allie Nagelski followed up with a service ace. After an attack error by the Blue Jays, the Owls were right back in the thick of things. Johns Hopkins managed to run their lead back up to 14-9, but Bryn Mawr once again battled back into the frame. Avary Taylor started this run with a kill of her own, and after a Blue Jays error, Annika Cole spun a serve in for a service ace to make it 14-12. Hopkins managed to net a point back, but the Owls got right back into the attack with three more points of their own, capping off the run with a mega block by Ofili. Unfortunately, that was as close as the Owls would get in the frame. Johns Hopkins never trailed in the set and once again closed out the frame with a big 7-0 run to cap the 25-17 set win.
The Owls finally managed to grab a lead in a set by starting off the third frame taking six of the first ten points. Ofili tallied two kills in that burst, and Sarah Gates closed out that period with a huge block of her own. It appeared as if finally Bryn Mawr had some momentum on their side, but it simply was not enough. Johns Hopkins went on another huge 9-0 run to put the match virtually out of reach. The Blue Jays Liz Wuerstle did most of that heavy lifting herself in that period, at one point registering four straight service aces. The Owls managed to battle back to as close as 19-14 in the set, but their deficit was simply too great to overcome. A kill by Kristi Rhead put the final nail in the coffin for the Owls, giving Hopkins the 3-0 sweep.
Bryn Mawr now heads into their final week of play next week, with two home contests on the slate. The Owls will play host to Swarthmore on Tuesday night in their final conference game of 2014. The Garnet hold a 21-5 overall record and are currently atop the Centennial Conference standings with an 8-0 league record. Bryn Mawr will then close out their 2014 campaign on Thursday, October 30th with a non-conference tilt against Goucher. That evening will also be Senior Night, a celebration of the careers of the three Bryn Mawr volleyball seniors.
