Box Score Bryn Mawr, Pa. – The Bryn Mawr volleyball squad got back in action earlier Saturday afternoon at Gettysburg College. Coming off a thrilling five-set victory over Washington College earlier in the week, the Owls were looking to build a winning streak over the Bullets. Unfortunately, that was not in the cards for Bryn Mawr today, as the hosts took home a sweep of the Owls with a 3-0 victory. Rachel Ofili led all players with 16 kills on the afternoon, the only player to reach double digits in that category.
Gettysburg (17-8, 4-2 Cent.) took home the first and second sets in easy fashion, thanks in large part to an extremely efficient attack. The Bullets racked up 14 kills in the first set and 13 in the second, all while committing very few errors. The hosts posted attack percentages of .333 and .407 in those frames, making it very difficult for the Owls (10-12, 1-6 Cent.) to stay in the match.
Fortunately, Bryn Mawr got things turned around bigtime in the third set. Finding themselves trailing 13-6 in the frame, the Owls went on a massive 16-3 run to take a huge advantage in the set. Noemi Moreno got that run started with a big kill, and then Sarah Gates backed that up with a kill of her own. After a Bryn Mawr service error, two Gettysburg errors and an ace by Gates made it a 10-14 contest. The Owls gave one back with an attack error of their own, but then ran off seven straight points to actually take the lead in the set. Kills by Ofili and Caroline Cosby made it 15-15, and then Bryn Mawr took the lead with even more kills by Ofili and Danielle Preziuso. By the time Gettysburg managed to win a point, the Owls held a 17-16 advantage. The visitors then extended that lead, capping off the run with another ace, this time from Lauren Shue.
The Bullets used their final timeout of the set to try and slow down the rally, and unfortunately for the Owls, it worked perfectly. After trading a pair of points each, Gettysburg won four straight to get back within one. Bryn Mawr made it set point on a service error by the Bullets, but the hosts closed things out with four more points in a row to take the set in 26-24 fashion and protect their home court with the 3-0 victory.
The Owls fall to 10-12 on the season, but they'll get a chance to get right back in the win column when they return to action on Wednesday evening. Bryn Mawr will travel just down the road to Haverford College, where a tough challenge awaits. The Fords sit at 16-8 overall and 6-1 in the conference, and had won six straight matches before falling victim to Johns Hopkins earlier this afternoon. Both sides will be looking for a crucial win in the contest, and it all gets underway at 7:00 PM in Haverford.
