Box Score Bryn Mawr, Pa. – The Bryn Mawr soccer squad battled a physical team from Washington College earlier Thursday afternoon on Applebee Field. Although the Owls outshot the visitors in the contest, and put more shots on net as well, both sides were forced to be satisfied with a draw when the horn sounded on a 0-0 tie.
The Owls (5-7-1, 1-4-1 Cent.) controlled play for much of the first half, dominating both in possession and on the scoresheet. Bryn Mawr registered 6 shots in the half, but Washington (3-7-2, 0-4-1 Cent.) did a great job of forcing those shots to come from either a very sharp angle or from a great distance away. Madeleine Mark had seven shots herself in the contest, including some with great pace from outside the box. However, Shorewomen goalkeeper Melissa Barry was up to the task, making four saves in the half en route to her fifth shutout of the season.
In the second half, Washington stepped up their play greatly, turning the contest into a wide-open affair. The Shorewomen had their best opportunity to score fifteen minutes into the frame when they put together a mini-breakaway. The ball was chipped over the Bryn Mawr back line and onto the feet of Bailey Howard, who ran in alone into the left-center of the penalty box. Owls goalkeeper Aviva Kosansky did a tremendous job reading the play, sprinting off her line to cut down the angle. Howard ripped a shot on goal, but Kosansky took it right in the midsection to momentarily prevent a score. The ball bounced away towards the penalty spot, where Washington's Emani Silva ran on and tried to one-time a shot into the net. However, Kosansky scrambled to her left and pounced on the effort, and she collected the rebound to prevent any further attempts.
With regular time ended and the game still deadlocked, the teams headed into overtime. The first ten minute period was controlled by the Owls, but they still had nothing to show for it. Mark had a great chance with a couple minutes left, but her blast from outside the box sailed just high over the right corner of the net. It was in the second overtime period that the Owls would get their best look at the goal. Just over two minutes into the frame, Marcela Dorfsman-Hopkins beat her marker down the center on a through ball and carried it in alone on the keeper. Dorfsman-Hopkins cut left around an onrushing Barry, and suddenly found herself staring down a wide open net as she tried to catch up with the ball on the left of the box. She made it, and was able to fire a shot towards the goal, but her momentum forced the shot just left of the near post and wide, and with that last best chance, the game ended in a 0-0 draw.
The Owls move to 5-7-1 on the season with their first tie since the 2012 campaign. The team will get just one day off before getting right back in action on Saturday on the road. Bryn Mawr travels to Gettysburg College to take on the Bullets, who hold an 8-3-1 overall record and are 4-0-1 in the conference. The Bullets are just a half-game out of first place in the Centennial Conference standings, and will be wrapping up a three-game homestand and carrying a four-game winning streak into Saturday's contest. It all gets underway in Gettysburg at 1:00 PM.
