Field Hockey Wins Double-Overtime Showdown on the Road at Goucher

Box Score

BALTIMORE, Md. – For the second game in a row, the Bryn Mawr College field hockey team played overtime to determine the winner, but this time, it was the Yellow and White coming out on top as they defeated Goucher 2-1 Saturday afternoon.

After a first-half that saw no scoring, despite both teams taking a combined 12 shots, the second-half had a different tempo.

After eight minutes of action, Justine Ruhlin took a pass from Lizzie Barminiski after she carried the ball down the right side of the field.

Controlling the play of the game for the next 19 minutes, Goucher looked to be in the driver seat to earn their first win of the season but the Owls had a different idea. With less than seven minutes to play and the Owls just earning a penalty corner, Bryn Mawr had it in their mind that they were going to score. As the play developed there was a loose ball scramble in front of the cage. Junior Ashley Arbuckle flicked the loose ball to freshman Haley Newsham who took the shot and beat Demie Huffman to tie the game at 1-1.

In the closing minutes of the half, Goucher was able to take three shots but stellar goaltending from senior Faith Westdorp forced the game into overtime.

Following the first 15-minute overtime period both teams geared-up for the second OT frame. After 13 minutes of scoreless action and the game closing in on its 100th minute, sophomore Kayla Bixler rose to the occasion with a shot from the top left side of the circle and finding nothing but the back of the cage.

The win, Bryn Mawr's third of the season, is their first overtime win of the season and snaps a two-game losing skid.

For the Owls, junior Madison Beckmann and Holly Constants took a team-high nine and eight shots, respectively. Bixler and Arbuckle added three each while Newsham made her only shot of the contest count as she netted her first collegiate goal. Between the pipes, Westdorp turned away 11 shots.

Bryn Mawr is back to action when they open Centennial Conference play on the road at Ursinus on Wednesday, Sept. 18, at 4:30 pm.
