Owls Push Gettysburg to Double Overtime Shootout in Season Finale

GETTYSBURG, PA — The Bryn Mawr College field hockey team capped off their 2025 season with a thrilling showdown at Gettysburg, taking an early lead off a penalty stroke goal by senior Maggie Barilla. The Owls held a 1–0 advantage at halftime before ultimately falling in a double-overtime shootout, 2–1 (3–1 SO).

Highlights:
  • Both defenses held strong through a scoreless opening frame. Bryn Mawr earned the first penalty corner of the night in the closing minutes, setting the tone with early offensive pressure.
  • The Owls broke through midway through the second period when Barilla converted a penalty stroke at the 26:13 mark to give Bryn Mawr a 1–0 lead. The goal capped a strong sequence that included two corners and three shots on target in the quarter. Goalkeeper Charlene Basque made a key save minutes later to keep the Owls ahead going into halftime.
  • Gettysburg found the equalizer early in the second half, capitalizing on a penalty stroke of their own at 39:16. Despite the setback, Bryn Mawr continued to hold possession and kept the Bullets from building sustained momentum.
  • In the fourth quarter, the Owls surged back with their most dangerous spell of play, firing three shots and earning another corner. Addison Graupensperger narrowly missed reclaiming the lead when her attempt rang off the post in the 52nd minute.
  • Bryn Mawr dominated extra time, generating four shots—three of which forced saves from Gettysburg's keeper. Basque stood tall at the other end, turning aside two overtime attempts to preserve the 1–1 scoreline.
  • Both teams traded opportunities in the second extra frame. Lucie Burgess and Noor Werndlij each tested the defense, while Basque added another crucial stop late to send the game to a decisive shootout.
  • Leya Patel opened the shootout with a composed finish, but Gettysburg converted two of their final attempts to edge the Owls 3–1 in the strokes.
The Bryn Mawr field hockey team closed out the 2025 campaign with a 7–11 overall record and a 2–8 mark in Centennial Conference play. Congratulations to the senior Class of 2026 – Basque, Barilla, Lauren Barlow, Annick van Blerkom, Jasmine Peterson, Natasha Ring, and Werndlij, - a group that leaves behind a remarkable legacy as members of the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament team and their historic run to the Second Round.
