Field Hockey Wins Season Opener 2-0 over Hood

Box Score

BRYN MAWR, Pa. – The Bryn Mawr College field hockey team opened the 2013 season with a 2-0 non-conference win over Hood College Friday afternoon. Not only was it the first win of the season, it was head coach Beth Riley's first win as a collegiate head coach.

The Owls controlled the tempo of the first-half by peppering the Blazer's goalie Ying Van Schaik with 13 shots. It took the Owls 11 shots before they were able to connect for the game's first goal on their 12th attempt. After earning a penalty corner, it was junior Holly Constants netting the goal with help from classmate Madison Beckmann and sophomore Kayla Bixler.

During the first-half, the Owls' defense held Hood to only two shots.

The second goal of the game came in the 48th minute as it was Constants again finding the back of the cage but this time it was another classmate, Ashley Arbuckle, lending the helping hand. Arbuckle played Constants in front of the net as Van Schaik came out to challenge the play and Constants struck the shot home giving the Owls a 2-0 lead.

Bryn Mawr's defense held strong in the second-half by shutting down Hood's attack. Junior Megan Rongone and sophomore Ashlee Williams patrolled the backline all game keeping the Blazer's at bay.

In goal and picking up her first shutout since Sept. 25, 2011, was senior Faith Westdorp. Westdorp turned away six shots to earn her first win of the season.

Riley becomes the 1st coach since 1977 to win her first game at the help of the Owls. The last coach to earn their first win leading Bryn Mawr was the legendary Jenepher Shillingford. Shillingford first win came on Sept. 22, 1977 when the Owls defeated crosstown rival Rosemont 1-0.

The Owls will take the week off before they host the Bryn Mawr College Tournament on Sept. 7-8, on the Main Line. They will take on Cedar Crest on the 7th at 11:00 am.
