Owls Battle Defending Champs Sunday Afternoon

CLINTON, N.Y. – The Bryn Mawr field hockey team turned in a gritty defensive performance on Sunday afternoon but ultimately fell 2-0 to defending national champion Middlebury at neutral site, Hamilton College.
Highlights:
  • The Panthers applied early pressure, but goalkeeper Charlene Basque anchored the Owls' back-line with two first-quarter saves and a strong defensive stop from Sophie Chung, kept the game scoreless after the opening 15 minutes.
  • Middlebury broke through in the second period, converting on a penalty corner to put the Panthers up 1-0 at halftime.
  • The Owls continued to defend resiliently in the third quarter, limiting Middlebury despite multiple penalty corners and shots on target. Basque added another key stop to keep Bryn Mawr within one heading into the final frame.
  • In the fourth, Bryn Mawr looked to capitalize offensively, and three different Owls tallied shots on goal. Leya Patel, Mary Stronach, and Ilona Bender forced saves from the Middlebury keeper. However, the Panthers sealed the game late with a goal in the 59th minute to secure the 2-0 result.
  • Basque finished with seven saves on the day, while Patel, Stronach, and Bender each recorded shots on goal for the Owls.
