BRYN MAWR, Pa. – the 2012-2013 tennis season came to an end Friday evening as the visiting F&M Diplomats blanked the Owls 9-0 in Centennial Conference action.
Despite two had fought matches in doubles, the Diplomats left doubles play holding a 3-0 lead. From the no. 2 position, juniors Catherine Austin and Jenny Vogel gave Meredith Lackey and Dana Sleeper a run but eventually fell 8-4. The No. 3 duo of freshman Kendall Baller and Rachel Genovese took a pair of games but lost 8-2 to Julia Fiala and Emily Gruenberg.
From the top Doubles position, Junior Vivien Chen and Freshman Melina Koukoutchos were blanked by Megan FitzMaurice and Anya Sahaydachny 8-0.
In singles play, No. 1 Chen fell 6-1, 6-3, to Sahaydachny while Vogel lost from the second position 6-1, 6-1. In the third position, Koukoutchos fell to Fialla 6-2, 6-1, and Baller, playing in the number four spot was defeated by Gruenberg 6-2, 6-0.
In the best singles match, Austin and Naomi Smith went to three sets to determine the win but it was Smith pulling out the 6-4, 3-6, 11-9 victory. From the No. 6 position, freshman Tirsa Delate fell 6-1, 6-2 to Marissa Rohner.
The Owls finish the season 5-15 overall and 0-10 in Centennial Conference play. The season was highlighted by a pair of wins on their Spring Break trip in Orlando, Fla.; a 5-4 win over NCAA DII USciences and a 4-1 win over Smith College, their first Seven Sisters win since the 2008-2009 season.
