CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Melanie Shafer produced a pair of wins Tuesday afternoon but it wasn't enough as host Washington College squeezed out a 5-4 victory over the visiting Owls.
Shafer's first win of the day came at No. 3 doubles as she teamed-up with Rachel Genovese. The tandem blanked their opponents, Meghan Tait and Amy Stevens, 8-0, to give Bryn Mawr their only win in doubles play. Later in the day, Shafer pulled-off another shutout in the No. 5 singles slot as she blanked Stevens 6-0, 6-0.
In other doubles action, the No. team of Anna Perocchi and Vivien Chen fell 4-8 while the No. 2 duo of Eliza Perocchi and Jenny Vogel dropped their match 4-8.
In singles action, the bottom half of the line-up produced three win; including Shafer's in the No. 5 spot. From the fourth slot, Vogel cruised to a 6-0, 6-3, victory over Gabie Batista while No. 6 Zoe Odenwalder produced a 6-2, 6-1, straight set win over Tait.
In the third position, E. Perocchi took Kat Cohen down to the wire before Cohen sneaked-out the win 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. From the top spot, A. Perocchi was defeated by Jordan Finnegan 6-2, 6-3, while No. 2 Chen fell 6-1, 6-1, to Campbell McNicol.
The Owls are back to action when they travel to Mount Holyoke for the annual Seven Sister Championships on April 14 and 15. The Owls start the tournament with the host Lyons before taking on Vassar, Smith and Wellesley over the two-day championship.
