Swarthmore Downs Lacrosse in League Tilt

BRYN MAWR, Pa. – Visiting Swarthmore tallied 16 goals in the opening half as the Garnet cruised to a decisive 24-8 win over Bryn Mawr Saturday afternoon in Centennial Conference action.

Swarthmore opened the game with a pair of goals separated by 32-seconds to jump out the quick lead. Bryn Mawr answered with an unassisted goal by sophomore Kathleen Magner, her first of three on the day, just 3:11 into the game.

The Garnet tacked on six more goals over the next five minutes to take a commanding 8-2 lead. Senior Natalie Chrismer netted her first of three goals at 19:44. Swarthmore bounced back and added three more goals to take an 11-2 advantage with just over seventeen minutes left in the half.

Magner and Chrismer added another goal each three minutes apart and separated by a goal by Swarthmore's Emma Sipperly. Magner's goal at 14:55 was assisted by Chrismer while senior Miranda Gordon-Zigel lent a helping hand on Chrismer's goal.

Gordon-Zigel connected with Chrismer again with 1:49 remaining in the half for Bryn Mawr's fifth goal of the day. Swarthmore's Sara Lentricchia free position goal with 1:29 to play gave the Garnet an eleven points half-time lead, 16-5.

Swarthmore came out firing in the second-half as they added three consecutive goals to their lead. Junior Melina Higgins and senior Zoe Pond-McPherson netted back-to-back unassisted goals just over a minute apart to pull the Owls within twelve, 7-19.

Magner recorded her third goal of the game with 9:54 left in the half. The Garnet put five more goals in the back of the net over the final 20 minutes of the game enroute to their fifth win of the season.

Leading Swarthmore with four goals and two assists was Marie Mutryn. Annalise Penikis added five assists and three goals while nine other different players recorded a goal.

In addition to Magner's three-goal game, she added five draws and a pair of ground balls. Chrismer tallied two ground balls, two caused turnovers and one draw. Gordon-Zigel won a team-best six draws.

Senior goalie Kate Flaming posted six saves before having to leave game due to an injury with twelve minutes left in the game. Gordon-Zigel posted one save in relief of Flaming.

The Owls return to action on Wednesday, March 28, when they travel to Lancaster for a showdown with the Franklin & Marshall Diplomats at 4:30 pm.
