Box Score BRYN MAWR, Pa. – Goucher's Justine Ruhlin's goal in the first overtime proved to be the difference as the visiting Gopher's defeated Bryn Mawr, 1-0, Saturday afternoon on Applebee Field.
In the first-half, Goucher (3-0) peppered senior goalie Elizabeth Toft with 14 shots. Toft was perfect turning away all eight shots that ended-up on goal.
In the second stanza, Goucher took only six shots and three of them were on goal. Just like the first half, Toft was perfect stopping all shots she faced. With the horn sounding at the end of the regulation and the score deadlocked at 0-0, both teams geared-up for extra time. This is second time in as many games that they Owls have had to play an extra frame to determine a game.
In the first overtime, Bryn Mawr (0-3) was able to get two penalty corners early but unable to capitalize on a pair of shots from senior Manya Steinfeld.
In the 77th minute of action, Goucher's Katie Gallagher fired a shot onto the net where Toft made a kick save. The kicked ball rolled to the stick of Ruhlin where she stopped it, took the shot and found the back of the cage for the game-winner.
The Gopher's kept constant pressure on the Owls defense all day as they unloaded 29 shots. Goucher also held a 13-4 lead in penalty corners.
In all, Toft posted 18 saves in her first appearance of the year. Steinfeld tallied three of Bryn Mawr's five shots; Madison Beckmann and Caroline Day combined for the other two.
Bryn Mawr returns to action Wednesday, Sept. 14, when they travel to Ursinus for a 4:30 pm contest.
