BALTIMORE, Md. – The Owls set the tone for their season with an explosive offensive showing on Saturday afternoon at Notre Dame of Maryland University. Six players managed multi score efforts in this dominate victory that the Owls hope will set the tone for their season. In her first game of the 2022-23 season, senior
Maya DiFrischia led the Owls in points with three goals and three assists. Junior
Camille Franklin also led the Owls with three goals and four shots on goal. Overall, The Owls offense had a strong day at the cage, making 66.7% of their shots. Both senior goalies took turns in the net,
Elizabeth Tompkins making three saves and
Riley Alexander with two. Bryn Mawr maintained the lead throughout the entire game and never looked back, solidifying a 20-4 victory.
From the whistle, the Owls maintained control with five Owls scoring in the first quarter. Senior
Sloan Johnson won the first draw of the game to give possession to the Owls, and within a minute, fellow sophomore
Maddie Sullivan scored the first goal, her second of the season. Johnson scored Bryn Mawr's second goal with an assist by DiFrischia. Within the next four minutes, DiFrischia would go on to score her first of three goals. After a Gator yellow card left Notre Dame a player down, Bryn Mawr wasted no time taking good use of this opportunity. Within seconds, DiFrischia and Franklin worked their way towards the Notre Dame goalkeeper and a shot from Franklin saw the back of the cage. Franklin went on to score another goal with Johnson and senior
Meghan O'Shea also tacking on their own goals to extend Bryn Mawr's lead to 7-0.
The Bryn Mawr offense continued to dominate throughout the second quarter with three Owls scoring their first goal of the season. Junior
Margot Becker opened the quarter with Bryn Mawr's eighth goal of the game. Gator Jade Stewart scored on a free position shot to get the home team on the scoreboard, but Becker was back at the cage seconds later for her second goal, assisted by senior
Paige Britton. Senior O'Shea and sophomore
Chessa MacGregor would be the next Owls to get their first as well. A draw control from DiFrischia led Bryn Mawr back to the cage with a goal by senior
Paige Britton, assisted by O'Shea. In the remaining minutes of the half, DiFrischia and sophomore
Leilani Soriano brought the score to 14-1.
Upon returning for the second half,
Riley Alexander replaced fellow senior
Elizabeth Tompkins in the net and the Owls gained quick possession with a goal from MacGregor within the first minute of play. However, neither team would see the back of the cage for the next three minutes. Finally, DiFrischia revived the scoring with a hat trick, assisted by junior
Haley Halvorson, who recorded her first assist of the season. Although Gator Sarah Generoso earned a second goal for the home team on a free position shot, sophomore
Orli McGuire-Berk and Halverson each saw the back of the cage to maintain their lead, 18-2.
The fourth quarter proved to be the lowest scoring 15-minute stint for Bryn Mawr with the Owls adding two to the scoreboard. Yet their extensive lead and strong defense dominated over Notre Dame. The Owls were again the first of the quarter to score, Franklin recording a hat trick and tying with DiFrischia with three goals. After a missed free position attempt from the Owls, it looked like their scoring may have come to an end. However, the Owls received one last opportunity when Sullivan saw an open
Charlene Basque without a Gator player in sight. The Notre Dame goalkeeper was unable to block the first-year's shot and the first-year scored her first collegiate goal. Not only was this a crowning achievement for the young Owl, but this marked the team's 20
th goal of the game, which had not been done by the program since their 20-1 win over Cedar Crest in March of 2020. In the remaining minutes, Gators Sarah Generoso and Jade Stewart each scored, but it was not enough to quell Bryn Mawr's extensive lead. The Owls' strong offensive showing resulted in a commanding 20-4 victory over their opponents and Bryn Mawr extended their win streak to two.
The Owls will return to action for another spring break game at Meredith University on Monday with a scheduled start of 4 P.M.
