RALEIGH, N.C. – The Bryn Mawr lacrosse program continued their spring break play at Meredith College on Monday afternoon. Both teams had a strong defense, with only 13 goals scored throughout the 60 minutes of play. Goalkeeper
Elizabeth Tompkins had an impressive day, recording 19 saves, almost doubling the amount from the past two games. Bryn Mawr led the scoreboard twice in the first half, but the Angels snuck out the win at 7-6.
The Angels were quick to the gate, taking their first shot seconds after the blow of the whistle. Although it was saved by Tompkins, Meredith's next shot got the home team on the scoreboard. However, it was not long until sophomore
Maddie Sullivan took her turn. Pushing past one Angel and shooting through another, she hit the back of the cage for the first tie of the game. Only a minute later, fellow sophomore
Chessa MacGregor earned Bryn Mawr their first lead with an untouchable shot. Tompkins managed to maintain the Owls lead, deflecting an Angel shot attempt, but quickly the home team retied the score with a goal by Meredith Arianna May. One more goal was to come in the first quarter, this time by the Owls. Holding possession,
Meghan O'Shea passed to fellow senior
Maya DiFrischia. Still on a high from her three-goal game on Saturday, DiFrischia shot past goalkeeper Horrell and the Owls led the first quarter 3-2.
The Owls extended their lead early in the second quarter with a goal by sophomore
Orli McGuire-Berk. As both teams crowded the cage, the hopes of a Bryn Mawr goal drifted from view. However, the sophomore finally saw an opening. Lowering her stick, McGuire-Berk shot between everyone's feet and with little time to react from the Angels, the Owls extended their lead 4-2. Unfortunately for the Owls, they did not have another scoring opportunity for the rest of the quarter. Meredith players Arrianna May and Jessica Dowdy each scored for the home team to tie the game 4-4 at halftime.
Returning for the second half, it would be Meredith to outshoot their opponents. However, the Owls were unwilling to give their opponents an easy win. Meredith Reese Walker scored early in the third and while Bryn Mawr took multiple shots, none notched the scoreboard for the next ten minutes. It looked like Meredith would maintain the lead at the end of the quarter, but with 30 seconds remaining, O'Shea saw an opportunity. With all Angels players focused on DiFrischia, O'Shea snuck towards the cage and out of nowhere shot past the goalkeeper's hips to tie the game for the fourth time at 5-5.
The Owls managed another close quarter, fighting until the last seconds of the game, but Meredith managed a two-point lead by the first half of the quarter. After four unsuccessful shot attempts by Bryn Mawr, the fifth finally stuck. On a free position shot, senior
Sloan Johnson tallied her first goal of the game to bring the score to 7-6. However, this would be the Owls last scoring opportunity before the Angels took the win 7-6 to end Bryn Mawr's two game win streak.
Bryn Mawr will continue their spring break competition on Thursday in Pennsylvania at Gwynedd Mercy with a start time scheduled for 11am.
